Sunset last night over one of our OTTB training horses 💟🐎❄️🥶

it’s been a trying few days, but everyone here gets all the special treatment. Hot soaked meals, extra hay, blankets upon blankets, warm water, feet picked from ice balls, and extra stall picking and shavings.

Here at the farm, every single horse is treated like our own 💟 no matter how hard the days are in this weather. Winter is not easy!

Now let’s start the countdown to spring!

12/05/2024

For the safety of our friends who come to ride on Thursday nights, open arena tonight is cancelled. The winds are pretty treacherous today. There are projected 55mph wind gusts, not ideal for driving horse trailers. Stay safe and see you next week!

UBie has been in training at the farm since July with head trainer, Chelsey O’Brien. They’ve made huge progress and shown the versatility of the thoroughbred as a western mount. He’s proudly offered for adoption through Pastured Place and is still here in training and competing locally!

Feature:

Everyone meet Unbeknownst To Me, aka “Ubie.” Ubie is an eight-year-old Kentucky-bred gelding by multiple graded stakes winner Fed Biz and out of Perfect Paula, by Songandaprayer. His pedigree also includes Giant’s Causeway, Wild Again, Unbridled’s Song and Rahy. He sold for $180,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He went on to make fifteen starts, win four races, and earn $71,064 on the track. His four wins were at Laurel Park, Penn National and Pimlico. He made his final start in 2022 and is now owned by Pastured Place, a nonprofit organization that rehabilitates, retrains, and rehomes off-track Thoroughbreds.

Chelsey O’Brien, an Ambassador for The Western Thoroughbred, retrained Ubie to be an all-around western mount. The pair competed at the 2024 Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover where they placed second in Barrel Racing and ninth in Ranch Work. In preparation for the Makeover, they completed obstacle challenges, competed in team penning, and went on trail rides. Chelsey says that Ubie is game to do anything. He is still available for adoption. If interested, contact Pastured Place!

If you would like to see your Thoroughbred featured on our page, send us a message! Please include your horse’s Jockey Club registered name, quality photos, and information about their off-track career. Note that horses with a body condition score of 3 or less will not be posted.

It was quite the week in KY for us - Chelsey and training horse UBie (JC: Unbeknownst To Me owned by Pastured Place) finished second in the TB Makeover Barrel Racing Finale and fourth in the preliminary barrels, they also were 9th overall in the prelimary ranch work. They also won one round of the barrel racing preliminary competition with a great performance in the horsemanship pattern - testing the rideability and training of the horses. The finishing touches were made right here at The 1789 farm, where he got lots of practice in indoor riding, trail riding, hill work, barrel patterning, and trail obstacle work.

Needing help with your OTTB? Looking for help to restart yours? Want to haul in for lessons?

Chelsey has over 15 years of experience restarting thoroughbreds for new careers in many different disciplines - hunters, jumpers, barrel racing, dressage, ranch, etc. She has handled them from birth, rehabs, yearling prep, on training farms, let downs, and then transitioning to second careers, putting hands on well over 2,000 TBs in her career. Her goal when restarting is to let the horse guide the process, to find what they enjoy most, and most importantly putting a solid foundation on them that instills confidence to go in any direction.

If you’re interested in learning more about our boarding, training, or lesson availability - shoot us a message!
