Happy Sports Medicine Sunday! Today we are diving into the power of ultrasound for injury diagnosis. Diagnostic ultrasonography is a non-invasive, painless method used to identify and monitor soft tissue problems and to examine tendons, ligaments and muscles often related to lameness. It is often used in conjunction with other diagnostics to identify the root cause of a presenting concern.

In addition to diagnosis of the initial presenting concern, sequential (time-lapse) imaging is used to evaluate the progress of treatments over time, and is very useful in monitoring healing in musculoskeletal or soft tissue injuries so that controlled exercise can be accurately implemented. Ultrasonographic evaluation helps to characterize and document the size, shape, echogenicity (brightness) and fiber pattern of soft tissue. Ultrasound is also used to evaluate bony surfaces of regions that can not be otherwise imaged.

Front Range Equine’s portable ultrasound enables us to perform complete exams in the field and to archive or share the images with referring veterinarians and clients through wireless Internet.

Ultrasound is also often used in conjunction with critical injections or therapies, such as PRP, to more accurately deliver the therapy to the target area.

Important Announcement Regarding EHV-1 Precautions

In response to the recent EHV-1 outbreak, we have implemented enhanced biosecurity measures to protect the health and safety of all horses in our care. As of last week, the following precautions have been and will continue to be in place:
– Sanitation of Equipment: All equipment will be thoroughly sanitized between appointments to prevent any potential transmission.
– Hand Hygiene: Our team will be washing and disinfecting hands between every patient interaction.
– Temporary Suspension of Haul-Ins: We will not be permitting any haul-ins for a minimum the next two weeks. After two weeks we will re-evaluate. Thank you for your understanding as we work to minimize risk.
– Restricted Foot Traffic: Access to our rehab barn will be limited in order to maintain a controlled and safe environment.
– Temporary Pause on New Rehab Patients: At this time, we are not accepting any new rehab patients. This pause allows us to reduce barn traffic and maintain the strictest possible biosecurity standards during the outbreak.
– All horses on the Front Range Equine Performance property are vaccinated for EHV-1.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and patience as we take these necessary steps. The health and well-being of our horses and clients remain our top priority.
For more up-to-date information about the EHV-1 outbreak, please follow Equine Disease Communication Center or Front Range Equine Urgent Care

It’s Sports Medicine Sunday! 🐴💉
This week we’re highlighting Mesotherapy, a proven pain management treatment that’s been helping horses feel and perform their best for years.

Mesotherapy targets chronic neck and back pain—common contributors to many lameness issues. It involves a series of tiny injections (just 4–6 mm under the skin) that deliver pain-blocking agents right where they’re needed most.

Many horses show improved comfort and reduced reactivity within 24–48 hours, and it can be used alongside other therapies like chiropractic care, acupuncture, shockwave therapy, or joint injections to maximize results.

Laser Therapy uses a powerful therapeutic device that uses a specific form of light therapy called photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT). PBMT works by shining a beam of infrared light at the site of injury. This beam of light stimulates the cytochrome c complex of the mitochondria, increases the levels of ATP production, and provides the cells with more energy to carry out regenerative processes. This laser is supported by ten years of research, is veterinarian approved, and has shown particular efficacy in treating sacro-iliac disease, degenerative joint disease, edema, bone spavins, tendonitis, and sesamoiditis.
FREP is proud to offer The Pegasus PTX Therapy Class IV Laser to its clients. If you are interested in laser therapy for your horse, please reach out to us at (970) 368-3125 or [email protected]

It’s Sports Medicine Sunday — Let’s Talk Shockwave! ⚡🐴
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a treatment modality that we often use on both bony and soft tissue injuries. It involves a high-energy focused sound wave that acts on a cellular level to increase blood supply and release tissue growth factors. These cellular changes cause an increase in the speed and quality of the body’s natural healing. Shockwave has deeper pe*******on than many other modalities and we use this technology routinely for proximal suspensory ligament injuries and axial skeleton pain.
If you are interested in shockwave therapy, please reach out to us at [email protected] or (970) 368-3125

There’s a reason more vets and bodyworkers are recommending SureFoot pads — it’s all about balance, proprioception, and relaxation.

Whether you’re schooling for those “uh oh” moments on a steep trail, recovering from a bad distance to a jump, or fine-tuning your cow horse’s fancy footwork — balance work matters!

Here’s why SureFoot pads are a game changer 👇

SureFoot pads create subtle instability under your horse's feet, activating proprioception and engaging core and postural muscles to maintain balance. This enhances body awareness, improves alignment, strengthens stabilizing muscles, and helps shift the horse’s nervous system from "fight or flight" to a more relaxed state.

How do SureFoot pads work?
• Proprioception & Muscle Activation: The pads’ gentle instability challenges balance and engages the nervous system. Your horse makes micro-adjustments to stay centered, activating deep postural muscles like the multifidus and iliopsoas.
• Improved Alignment & Awareness: The horse becomes more aware of its body position and weight distribution, helping correct inefficient movement patterns. Consistent use teaches the horse to move more securely and efficiently.
• Physical & Mental Relaxation: Standing on the pads can calm the nervous system, leading to relaxation signs like head lowering, deeper breathing, and licking and chewing.
• Customizable Challenge: Pads come in varying densities, from soft to firm, so each program can be tailored to your horse’s needs.

We’re proud to incorporate SureFoot Pads into our rehabilitation and conditioning programs, using them regularly to support balance, strength, and recovery.

Is your horse recovering from an injury, but you’re not ready to send them to a rehab facility?
Front Range Equine Performance offers Rehabilitation Consultations so you can support your horse’s recovery right from home or your own barn. One of the most challenging things when your horse has an injury is to come up with a plan to get them back to feeling and performing their best.
Our rehabilitation-trained veterinarians, working alongside your regular veterinarian, design a patient-specific rehabilitation plan tailored to your horse’s injury, needs, and available resources.
We ask that you provide us with any pertinent records or imaging for review. We then schedule a phone or Zoom consultation with you and/or your veterinarian to discuss the case and the patient's specific needs. Our veterinarians then design and provide you with a comprehensive rehabilitation program to follow, complete with recommended recheck exams by your veterinarian or virtually. As your horse progresses through their specific program our veterinarians will continue to tailor the specific rehabilitation program based on your horse’s progression and healing.
For more information about our rehabilitation consultations, please reach out to our office at (970) 368-3125 or by emailing [email protected]
