This poor mama opossum, carrying seven babies in her pouch, was just trying to survive. Thin and struggling, she found some cat food left outdoors, only to be harmed by humans for it. Punished for seeking sustenance.
Now recovering from injuries (possibly a gunshot wound), she's on antibiotics and finally receiving the food she desperately needs. Thankfully, the formula is suitable for her babies too, allowing them to eat freely without further draining mama's limited energy.
Despite her ordeal, this mama shows incredible trust, allowing me to examine her for injuries. She can move around but is weak from infection and malnourishment. Her cooperation speaks volumes about her relief at being safe with a steady food supply, free from fear.
Please remember, opossums are beneficial backyard allies. They devour thousands of ticks a year, reducing the risk of Lyme disease for us and our pets. They also clean up dead animals that could spread further illnesses.
Coexistence is simple: leave them alone to do their valuable work. If pet food is a concern, bring it out at feeding times and then store it securely. Our furry friends are adaptable and will adjust to the routine. Let's prevent tragedies like this one – a little understanding goes a long way.
