Urinalysis & Ultrasound for pets with HUA.Hyperuricosuria or HUA, is common among Dalmatians and Bull Dogs, this is a serious but typically very manageable condition with proper diet and monitoring. However, it’s also a condition commonly not given enough respect. This condition does require a specialized diet with special attention, support and monitoring of the Bladder, and Kidneys. A urinalysis is a lab that can be done on your dogs urine to test for the presence of crystals, bilirubin, blood, protein as well as the pH and specific gravity that can influence those as well. A urinalysis is also a snapshot, a picture of how your pet’s urine at that specific time, your pet’s urine is actually fluctuating and changing all day, every day depending on their diet, activity, water consumption, medications and a variety of other factors. An ultrasound is imaging that allows a view into the bladder and of the surrounding organs, this will show you what is present in your pet’s bladder, crystals are not always present in a urinalysis and stones will not be so it is important to have both done quarterly at a minimum. In between this regular veterinary care your pet also needs the appropriate diet, supplements and pH and specific gravity monitoring from home on a regular basis using pet specific pH strips. Although these strips are helpful at managing your pet’s condition they are not thorough enough to skip your quarterly urinalysis and if you notice any changes in your pet’s urine quality; changes in urination, color, odor or texture a urinalysis and ultrasound should be scheduled immediately.Monitor responsibly and don’t skip these appointments, they can be the difference between a stone removal surgery or not.•••••

What is in-season can change depending on your area! Check out the website below to see what’s in-season near you!

*Remember that while dogs can benefit from these - think a paw’s worth or less at a time of veg and fruit should just be a few small pieces - cats are obligate carnivores and as such would benefit more from a meat topper-

AVOCADO MEAT IS NOT TOXIC - just the pit!
Apricot fruit is not toxic, do not feed pit, stem or leaves!

GI Health Checklist for Moderate to Severe Injury

These are some of the less commonly discussed contributors to poor gut health and while they may or may not be the cause of your pet’s GI issues, they can be helpful, particularly in the cases where it feels like everything causes an extreme reaction. For overly sensitized GI tracts, every contributor must be assessed and while small amounts of chlorine may not immediately cause a reaction or dysbiosis in a healthy pet, it is abrasive for a pet experiencing extreme GI distress.

Food, supplements, and timing are all dependent on your pet’s specific condition and which organs are under stress, however, these 3 things can be helpful across the board.

Kylo’s Nutrition Counseling Journey - Chronic Joint Pain Resolved

Kylo’s story is one I think many pet owners can relate to as it is something we see often in nutrition counseling. What I think is less commonly known is that chronic joint pain can often be avoided, reversed or significantly improved through proper diet and a lean weight. Sometimes there are extenuating circumstances, genetic predispositions or injuries that contribute to it (these can often at least be improved upon) but more often than not it’s the product of an inflammatory diet and extra pressure weighing on those joints.

One of the most common questions that I am asked is “what joint supplements do you recommend”, and while I believe they can help in many cases, they shouldn’t be the focal point. Your pet’s diet is the pinnacle of their health, if it is inflammatory just supplements will be fighting an uphill battle, because every single day that diet is contributing to the inflammation that your supplements are trying to combat. While I see supplements take a pet’s health to the next level, food is what has the most impact overall.

If your pet is struggling with joint pain, look to the diet, look to their weight first. Imagine if you could decrease their pain by even half, or entirely. Kylo’s story is not an uncommon one, and that’s what makes it so inspiring!

Answering YOUR questions - HUA Dals with BASE pHI cannot stress enough how important it is to bring on someone with experience working with this condition to your pet’s health team. This condition is downplayed A LOT, just because someone in a breed group has thus far “successfully” managed the condition with little to no intervention doesn’t mean that will be YOUR experience. This condition can progress QUICKLY and having a team member for your pet who understands this condition and how to maintain and manage it and the nuances of it is imperative for your HUA pets continued health. Yearly or biannually urinalysis is NOT enough. Your pets pH is changing every single day, all day long. Urinalysis AND ultrasound should be done at your vet’s office QUARTERLY in combination with a low-purine, HIGH moisture diet and weekly pH monitoring at home. This is a lifelong condition, and requires a lifelong commitment to this care, their risk for developing urate uroliths INCREASES after the age of 4.This video is for informational purposes ONLY. Using acidifiers for an HUA dog needs to be closely monitored by someone with experience working with these dogs.Schedule a consultation for your dog or cat at: ABalancedCanine.net/nutrition-counseling or follow the link in our bio ☎️ (international help available)••••

Answering YOUR questions - HUA dogs & CheeseTrust me, I get it - HUA can be an extremely limiting condition, but it’s also a serious condition that can mostly be managed with proper diet. While cheese in moderation is totally fine, I see it used in excess among HUA Dalmatian owners because it’s low in purines, it’s easy to carry around, and dogs love it! Don’t forget that purines are not the only factor contributing to poor bladder health, too many acidifiers in the diet also contribute. To add to that, dairy promotes dampness in the body, creating a hospitable environment for yeast to flourish! There is a free downloadable PDF on our website under the “resources” tab for a list of treat ideas for HUA dals.40% of our current client list is Dalmatians!
