Happy from !
Friendly reminder to wave your slides! 👋

When aspirated cells or cells in fluid (including blood smears) are left to dry on their own, the cells can undergo cell damage and cellular crystallization, all of which are bad news when it comes to getting a solid diagnosis.

The key is to facilitate rapid air drying by gently blowing on the slides, waving them around (hello new !), or using a hair dryer on cool and low. Heat is not the key- it’s the air flow we need.

You worked so hard 😅 to obtain those samples, don’t let them become non diagnostic by sitting on the counter 💙

Check out this from a 1cm, circular, raised pink dermal mass on the pinna of a 3-year-old spayed female .

Key cytologic features noted here are:
▪️individual round cells with lots of light gray cytoplasm
▪️these round cells have round, central nucleus with finely stippled chromatin pattern
▪️moderately proteinaceous background
▪️also seen are few red blood cells 🩸, small lymphocytes and a neutrophil

Diagnosis: cutaneous histiocytoma, which is good news for this dog 🎉. These can be tricky because they need to be carefully distinguished from poorly differentiated plasma cell tumors and degranulated mast cell tumors.

Check out our blog for more cool cases and images!
