There are some skills, like riding a bike, that once they click, are imprinted in our cognitive and muscle memories forever. Most, however, require practice and repetition, if not for improvement, then simply for stasis. Take, for example, the widely known fact that there is a natural regression in a child’s academic abilities come the start of a new school year; this is expected because most kids’ have not been practicing their academic skill set over the summer. Therefore, teachers expect to start the year refreshing and reviewing previously taught items. You probably know where I’m going with this by now. The same principles can be applied for dogs. While some skills are, for the most part, one and done (I can think of the “sit” command as an example), the majority of the skills that take a greater level of executive functioning and impulse control need to be practiced repeatedly over time to prevent atrophy. For better or worse, mammalian minds, like mammalian bodies, need to be exercised regularly.

If you’re the owner of a dog who has undergone training with us but are starting to see some regression at home, the odds are we are probably seeing some of the same regression at daycare and it might be time for a training refresher. Brother vs sister energy

Scooby (the little guy) is what we like to call a “gate crasher”. This behavior is innocuous enough alone, but in a large group of dogs the overstimulation caused from this type of arousing behavior can lead to reactivities. A simple solution is to teach the command “spot” so when he attempts to crowd or push on the air gate, he can be redirected to a more appropriate place . Scooby has the command down pretty well alone so we added in a few other dogs we have trained as distractions! Well done everyone! 👏
