Distemper is a serious and potentially fatal viral disease in dogs, affecting the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. It is highly contagious and can be transmitted through airborne droplets or direct contact with infected bodily fluids. Vaccination is the best way to prevent canine distemper, and early detection and supportive care are crucial for managing the disease. While dogs of any age can contract canine distemper, puppies under four months old and unvaccinated dogs are at the highest risk. This is because their immune systems are not yet fully developed, or they may not have received the full course of vaccinations. Vaccination provides significant protection against distemper, but it is not 100% effective. Factors that can affect the effectiveness of the vaccine include:
• Age: Puppies and older dogs may have a weakened immune system, making them more susceptible.
• Health status: Underlying health conditions can also affect the immune response.
• Exposure to the virus: Dogs may be exposed to high concentrations of the virus, overwhelming the vaccine's protection.
• Time since vaccination: The vaccine's effectiveness can wane over time, requiring booster shots.

What are the signs of canine distemper?
• Discharge from the eyes and nose.
• Fever.
• Coughing.
• Lethargy.
• Reduced appetite.
• Vomiting.
• Diarrhea.
