ā€œChipā€ last day here at the yards before he goes home tomorrow. This big alligator of a ranch gelding was super handy to have. Between opening and closing gates more efficiently, tracking cattle better and redirecting his need to bite em into a useful tactic (to quit losing em), I had a lot of fun with him here.

Also had to throw the taps on yesterday, Tis the season.

Little bit of November this morning.. canā€™t believe itā€™s almost December. ā„ļø

ā€œChipā€ goes home this weekend. Gosh heā€™s been handy to have in the string. My two personal horses, Sven and Bucking Horse, theyā€™ve been getting a much needed tune up after having most of the year off.

Iā€™ve got one spot open in January and open for two spots in February as well. Let me know!

HOW IS YOUR POSITION

Howā€™s the position of your hands? Your seat? Are your reins or lead too long or too short?

We talk about timing often but if your positioning is not correct, youā€™ll be waiting on a change that is NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN!!!

Shall I say it louder for the back to hear? Not only have I personally been training outside horses of all walks of life, they all come with owners too. I see more failed attempts from the wrong positioning than I do timing.

So whatever it is that you are schooling, ask yourself that simple question.

Where are you on the ground?
Howā€™s your hands?
Is the leg open or off or far back enough?
Howā€™s the length of your rein or lead?
Are you sitting foward, back, or to the inside?
Are you pulling to your hip, side of hip or to your belly button?
Are you looking where you are going?
The list goes onā€¦.

Little bit of November lately. Gearing up for an outside horse swap, riding my personal horses again and chasing a lot of cattle.

Coming up on our big stock cow sale next month which means 20 days horseback no break and long long work days.

I had a feeling about this one about a year ago or so now. I just knew heā€™d turn into a beauty. Sometimes itā€™s worth taking a risk on these littlesā€¦ I love giving them a fair shot. Heā€™s doing so great in his new home because of some selfless ladies giving sh****rs a shot.

When youā€™re hard at it~ you take a nap anyway you can. These horses sure are earning their keep this month. Weā€™ve finally hit the long hours of fall run.

Itā€™s very important to switch out horses throughout the day. I ride between 2-4 horses every day depending on the day and the mental/physical state of each horse. I make them last and build them up slowly to take on this heavy work load instead of burning up every one. I choose to respect my horses for working hard and reward them with time off.

Iā€™m a huge supporter of groundwork butā€¦

There becomes a point when way too much ground work is being done and is causing a negative experience for our horses and negative result for us.

Which leads me to šŸ‘‡šŸ»

Itā€™s not about just getting the gears of walk, trot, lope, stop, steer, and be able to stand on his back. If you told me I was going to have mainly c**t starts and not performance horses, I wouldā€™ve laughed at you 10years ago. But hereā€™s the deal. This is what your client wants, correct? But letā€™s be honest, they donā€™t know that they want a horse soft in the bridle. They want him guiding between your hands and legs. They want a mentally sound horse that stands tied to the hitching rail. They want to be able to ask that horse something, and that horse to be willingly a partner WITH them. Clients donā€™t know this until they take them home and discover there is a problemā€¦if itā€™s not there.

There is so much involved with starting a young horse and everyone of them have a different timeline. Itā€™s just the way it is. Understand there is so much under the surface that unless you start multiple c**ts yourself. You just donā€™t knowā€¦until you know.šŸ˜‰

ā€œDonā€™t let him get away with that!ā€

Your horse is not trying to get away with a damn thing.

ā€œGet after her and make her pay attention!ā€

Do you really think that harassing your horse into obedience while she is anxious is the best solution?

ā€œYou have to be the leader and get him to respect you!ā€

Respect is earned through trust, not forced. Read that again. And again.

ā€œDonā€™t let her win!ā€

If you think this is a competition with your horse, neither of you is ever going to win.

Check yourself. Check anyone else who tries to employ these methods with you or your horse. Be willing to get some science-based education on horse behavior and brain function. Be willing to change trainers or barns.

Your horse is always communicating in the only way she can, not trying to get one over on you. Pain. Trauma. Fear. Poor training. Poor nutrition. Too much confinement. Ill-fitting tack. An overly demanding training/competition schedule. Not enough conditioning. Your unbalanced body, your challenging energy, your fear, your lack of riding or handling skills. This is what they are responding to.

Step up, or step off. Before your horse makes the decision for you.

Thought for the day:
The kindest act you can do for a horseā€™s mental wellbeing is to remove the grey areas from his relationship with you.
Create unbending lines that should not be crossed.
Create physical feelings that should be followed and others that he should move away from.
Make them as clear as you need to and be absolutely consistent.
Be aware of these lines and feelings so that you can enhance clarity with timing.
Learn to be aware enough that you donā€™t miss the times when he forgets the lines.
Train yourself to recognise and respond to the good and the ā€œnot so goodā€ accordingly.
Forget trying to desensitise for a while and sensitise your horse and yourself to a point where there is no conflict between you.
Take the confusion and conflict from his life and he will relax and deal with many things without ever having to specifically work on it.
For horses knowing what to expect from the one calling the shots is a gift.
He will feel safe with that. He will relax around that.
He will lose his resistance and the resulting discomfort around that.
He will not feel like he is in a conflict every time he is handled!
Be obsessive about the lines until you donā€™t have to be.
Then you can both relax and feel safe.
