Puppies became all kinds of fun in week four and five. Rough housing amped up and became more energetic. They got new stuff on their quilt and in their enclosure every day. They found their voices and learned which ones were acceptable and which ones were not. Kiska even started enforcing my rules which i thought was hilarious! You’ll see her get involved when the voices get nasty and other times she trying to get them back into the quilt! The puppy baby gym was very popular, and the variety of new things daily was fun! New textures for feet, new smells, new moving things, ways to play, and they got so affectionate! They love giving puppy kisses! They started keeping me very busy!

In their enclosed area for daytime which was in the dining room, puppies could hear all the household noises and get used to blenders, vacuum cleaner, doorbell, etc but it had higher sides and Kiska wasn’t free to come and go as she pleased. If she was out she always wanted in, if she was in it wasn’t long before she wanted out. Puppies both play really well by themselves and they started waiting to do the wrestling with each other til they were out on the quilt i noticed, and calmer play here. The design of this area was so everywhere they could be other than in their bed or a crate, was a proper place to p*e. Later on I’d start moving it further away from the places they’d sleep so they had to hold it til they got there to the grass and go looking for it. The grass had ground alfalfa pellets under it so it did smell like grass. It was too cold to have them start going potty outside at five weeks like i wanted to so I had to wait a week. In the end starting outside at six weeks didn’t stunt their progress a bit! But the week they were five weeks i was having trouble keeping them warm enough INSIDE the house without complicating things further. And they loved eating food which they also got to start at four weeks! Yum!

At four weeks old we started bringing the puppies out to a quilt on the living room floor to have bigger more exciting playtimes. They knew where their potty tray was and they used it! The quilt was to give them traction, and a defined area to be in. Without traction their legs slipped and splayed out and they looked like swimmers which isn’t good for them. The quilt is where all the best play stuff was and new people started visiting for socialization. New items showed up every day on the quilt. At four weeks old i was so busy with puppies I got hopelessly behind in posting!

Well I think crate training is working. They sufficiently love their crate. The dark picture was in the dark this morning when I work up, I found them tucked into the blankets neatly like if a person had done it, and they did it themselves! I had to check back all morning til noon trying to find them awake but they were always voluntarily in the crate asleep every time. Finally I got them moved out to the dining room. This current nap brownie went into the crate them whined til her sister joined her. She’s a bossy baby, clearly….

The puppies are so playful now and so energetic. Brownie is now 4lbs. Their personalities are really coming out now.

Well lots of new things.
1) Puppies love country music! I’ve been playing music since sometimes it’s a too quiet for when I’m the only one home. And I want them used to lots of noise.
2) They moved onto a larger pen a couple days ago and one big reason is it’s better for potty training. The other is desensitization to household noises like going from silence to the blender screaming to make a smoothie! But on potty training the closest tray they actually have not put any p*e on since three days ago - they’re first day in this setup. They walk right thru the close tray to get to the far one which IS right where I want it. After a couple more days I’ll be able to remove the close tray all together and begin moving the other one farther away. Eventually outside.
3). Crate training began. I’ve been putting them in the crate for naps and whenever I leave during the day. They sleep tight thru it like pros.
4) We moved to artificial turf as it covers up the p*e pads and alfalfa pellets and deposits they’ve made. It looks so much nicer and it drains right away to the p*e pad leaving dry (fake) grass to be on. The main reason tho is the brown puppy was grabbing the far edge of the p*e pads and backing up to dump everything on it and make a jumble of the pads. So… we had to come up with something!
5) We have started puppy mush which is kibble blended into powder and mixed with goats milk to make slop. Yum!!!
6) Rough housing has become a lot more fun and amusing. All the sounds… oh my! They’re a lot more active now and even bunny hop to get places fast. It’s not a super coordinated run just yet. They’re growing fast and I’m beginning to see the sad day when it’s over like a blur and they’re not mine anymore…. But for now they are still just the sweetest, most affectionate puppies I’ve ever known!

A lot has changed in the last few days. Blonde baby, Whisper, hit 3lbs today, and her little nose is turning more black but still has a pink spot. They’re getting closer to climbing out of their enclosure but haven’t managed yet.they’ve had their fist very young visitor and did great with that, but the biggest thing is they’ve learned to play with each other and with their mother and Kiska’s figured out how to play back now!! It’s very exciting! Plus, I even saw the brown puppy, Squeak, wagging her tail for a second! If you watch the video you’ll see a bit where Whisper is playing with Squeak’s tail. Also, I set up a new enclosure for daytimes in the dining room so they can get used to normal household sounds. I’ve been playing country music for them until and including today to get them plenty of noise. They’re doing well on potty training! This enclosure will help me to know when to advance them. They should get to avoiding where they are walking to the far tray to use the potty, because it’s the furthest away from their bed. That’s when I know I can take out the trays in the middle and give them some play space. I’m hoping that’s within a few days!

Conversations with puppies…. Somewhat one sided but fun anyway. In addition to opening their eyes yesterday, Whisper hit 2lbs! Squeak did that two days ago and it’s old news but Whisper is keeping up in the growth department. The walking/dragging themselves around is cute, and their back legs are getting almost ready to stand. Their whelping box underwent a transformation yesterday, on their two week birthday, going from having a flatter fleece blanket on one side, and a cozy sheepskin on the other, thinking they’d learn which is the bed side. And last night while they slept, a plastic tray with alfalfa pellets appeared on the non bed side of the box. Alfalfa smells like grass so you guessed it, we’re beginning potty training! This is not for use yet but it’s important to expose them to the pellets long before they ever eat food with their mouth, so they don’t confuse the two and be pellet eaters. Their bed area will shrink this next week and bathroom area will grow as we move from simple exposure to use. Tonight I’ll post Christmas pics so check back later! My photographer has been busy!
