Any one know the purpose?

We’ve pulled the stirrups back on this mouthy young horse to keep him from grabbing ahold of them and risking getting his jaw caught. If you’ve ever seen it happen, you know it’s not pretty—it can cause serious trauma and be a tough situation to deal with.

Water is a vital resource for horses year-round, but its importance becomes even greater during the winter months. Maintaining proper hydration is essential for horses to support digestion, overall health, and especially for preventing colic, a potentially life-threatening condition.

In winter, horses may drink less water due to cold temperatures, or water sources might freeze, limiting access. Reduced water intake increases the risk of impaction colic, a condition that occurs when food material becomes lodged in the horse’s digestive tract. This is exacerbated by the dry, fibrous nature of winter forage like hay, which contains less moisture compared to fresh pasture grass. Without sufficient water, the digestive system slows and cannot properly break down this material, potentially leading to blockages.

Encouraging adequate water consumption is critical. Horses should normally drink 5-12 gallons of water daily, and ensuring the water is warm enough—between 45-65°F—can help encourage drinking. Studies show that horses are more likely to consume warm water during cold weather. Using heated water buckets or tank deicers can prevent freezing and make water more appealing.

Fun Fact: Research shows that horses drink almost 40% more water per day if given warm water (45-65 °F) instead of near-freezing water. (Kristula and McDonnell, 1994)

Electrolytes or salt supplements can also stimulate thirst, prompting horses to drink more. Offering soaked hay or adding water to feed can provide additional hydration. However, soaking hay or feed isn’t recommended in environments where these items would freeze solid before being consumed by the horse.

Preventing dehydration in winter is a proactive measure to safeguard against colic. Regularly monitoring water intake and ensuring clean, accessible, and palatable water is essential. By addressing these needs, horse owners can help maintain their horses’ health and comfort throughout the colder months.

Must have either a Pivo camera, FaceTime or Zoom, and headphones for best communication. If using FaceTime or Zoom a videographer may be needed.

Cost? $50 for a hour session including exercises to continue working on post lesson.

Trust the process & be patient! Every round pen session with this horse begins with rushing around the pen, anticipating everything, and not really thinking just reacting. I never ask her to trot nor lope until we can walk quietly and I have her mentally engaged….here is how I get there…. Like & share!

Papi’s first round pen session was nothing short of success! We have worked a fair bit on groundwork while on a line but this was her first time loose in a round pen. I anticipated a certain level of disconnect since she would have the freedom to ‘leave me’ but was pleasantly surprised by how well she stayed with me. She is incredibly sensible, smart and always eager to learn. “If you are going to teach a horse something and have a good relationship, you don’t make him learn it…you let him learn it.” -Ray Hunt As a trainer, personal horses always take the back burner. This 3yo has had little to no consistency when it comes to training sessions. He gets pulled out once or twice a week at most but in the last month or so I’ve felt a huge change in his balance and willingness to learn. Worm is looking and feeling more and more like a big horse. I can’t wait to see what his future holds!

Played with something new this week! Long-reining can help to improve the horses self-carriage and responsiveness to the aids, and your feel and timing. It also can useful when bringing a horse back into work or when working a young horse who hasn't been introduced to a rider's weight. Sorry for the poor video quality…I was lucky to have any in the wind that day.
