With the new year here, I’m excited to announce some big changes for J-S Equine after completing our home arena. This new space opens the door to some really exciting opportunities moving forward.

I’ll now be offering haul-in lessons, working on getting a few clinics scheduled, and accepting a limited number of outside horses for training. These additions allow me to better serve riders who are looking for intentional, individualized programs in a focused, supportive environment.

I’m looking forward to this next chapter and can’t wait to welcome you and your horses out to the arena 🤍

✨ First Lesson at Home! ✨
Still got a bit of work to do on the arena fencing, but gave my first official lesson at home today — and it couldn’t have gone better!

As we prep for another Montana winter, I can’t help but look back on the years I spent in Washington. Winters there meant endless stacking of small square bales—load after load, trying to keep the barn stocked and the horses fed. It was good hay, even “export quality,” but it came at a cost: time, money, and plenty of sore muscles.

Here in Montana, the approach is different. Large round bales are the only practical option. They’re not the same pretty, high-dollar hay I was used to in Washington, but they’re efficient, affordable, and keep feed in front of the horses all winter long. Out here, survival and practicality outweigh perfection.

I don’t miss the endless stacks of squares one bit. Montana winters demand a different rhythm, and I’ve learned to embrace the convenience of rolling in a bale, knowing my horses have what they need to make it through the season.

Back to Training Season at J-S Equine 🐴
The arena is officially back in action, which means no excuses for getting horses solid under saddle.

Today’s lineup includes Worm, Midge, Papi, and Cinch — each at different stages in their training. From green horses just starting out to those needing a consistent tune-up, our focus is on building confidence, responsiveness, and a strong partnership between horse and rider.

With the right foundation, every ride becomes a step toward developing dependable, willing mounts. I’m excited to see this crew progress over the coming weeks and look forward to sharing updates along the way.

Big milestone for us — after a long week the arena footing is complete! 🙌 The horses are already back to work and loving it. It’s great to feel them moving comfortably in the new footing.

Fencing will be going in this winter, but for now we’re just soaking in this progress and feeling grateful to be one step closer to having our dream arena. 💕

🐴 Big things are happening at J-S Equine! 🐴

We’ve officially started building our arena and couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead. This is just the beginning, and it means more space for lessons, training, and future events down the road.

Long-lining is one of my go-to tools when preparing a young horse to be started under saddle. It allows me to safely introduce concepts like steering, stopping, and moving forward off pressure—all from the ground.

This method helps build softness, balance, and mental focus without the added weight of a rider, and it gives me a clear window into how the horse processes new information. By the time I swing a leg over, they’ve already got a solid understanding of the basics.

A calm, confident start makes all the difference. 🐴

Getting back in the saddle takes a little creativity these days!
My left leg nowhere near strong enough to mount the usual way, so we’re improvising. I’ve been teaching the horses to “park” next to whatever I can climb—whether it’s a tailgate, fence, trailer fender, or the trusty 4-wheeler.

Worm is really earning his keep—took him all of 10 minutes to figure it out. We’ll see if he remembers the assignment in the coming days… Stay tuned!
