Long overdue post . The long hot summer is hopefully coming to a end . The ups and downs this summer at times have been heartbreaking . I started the summer with notifications that my home owners insurance was being cancelled . ( that is a terrifying thought with the bizarre weather issues we encounter these days ). Bane (alpaca ) suddenly became neurological and passed . Then Parsa ( a very old paralyzed dog ) passed . Queenie starting exhibiting severe lameness in her back leg and within a few weeks was unable to use her leg at all . We sadly made the decision to euthanize . Blackie ( alpaca ) Hemma (pig) starting losing weight and both within a few days stop eating and were humanely euthanized. Necropsys on both showed cancer had taken over their bodies . Zeus is experiencing protein loss and keeping him eating is a daily challenge. I care for these animals personally every minute of everyday and losing these one after another is totally devastating… over 100 animals call the sanctuary home the losses are heartbreaking but the animals here who have a second chance at life and be loved makes it all worthwhile ….On the brighter side. Simon ‘s visit to Cornell is complete. His teeth issues are resolved. The swollen gland under his throat was biopsied and was not cancerous . And Finally we need to formally introduce Lisa. A blind standardbred that we offered sanctuary to in honor of our beloved Queenie. She was also a Amish horse heading to slaughter . Simon has taken on the job of “seeing eye horse “and keeps a close and loving eye on her . Welcome sweet Lisa …

Courtesy post …. This dog is not at willowswings…Dog needs home by Sept 30 . .

This is colbey. He lost his leg at the age of 4 and it hasn’t slowed him down one bit. He loves to love. Wherever you are, he is. He is 10 going on 11 and is moving a little slower now. Stairs are a challenge so is slippery floors. He struggles to hold still while going to the bathroom and has 💩 accidents in his sleep. Vets say his back leg just won’t stabilize him anymore but things look “normal” back there. Colbey has separation anxiety and just needs someone to continue to care and love on him with constant attention. He is my baby and I want him happy and safe.

I have to relocate for a new job and I can’t find a place that’s adequate for him to be with me. Plus being away during work hours he wouldn’t be okay in a kennel with these accidents for a long period of time.

Courtesy Post EMERGENCY HOME NEEDED!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!! Hello future best friend! My name is Jelly Roll. I am a 17 month old blue Merle, standard poodle. I am currently in a foster home because my pet parent could no longer care for me. Unfortunately, I can’t stay at my current home permanently.

I want to be your ride or die, your protector, and your constant companion. I command all of your attention, and I don’t play well with cats or other dogs at the moment, so I must be the only animal currently in your home. I love hanging out and playing with the teenagers in my house, but I’m not sure how I would play with small children. I also need my human to be able to spend a lot of time at home with me. I am very active and love going for walks and playing outside. I equally love sitting on the couch with my head in your lap, while you binge watch your favorite shows. I have a lot of love to give to the right family. I know that once you meet with me, that you will fall head over heels for me :)

Willow‘s wings animal sanctuary is a home sanctuary for special needs animals.
I want to take a few minutes and explain the criteria and thoughts on when we determine an animal is a lifetime sanctuary animal or is special needs adoptable . Special needs adoptable is when we have an animal who has initially come to us requiring physical therapy/medical care and has had that need corrected /or is resolved ,considered stable and no longer progressive or present .
Adoptions take place when we are confident and comfortable that a approved adopter can physically, emotionally and financially manage this animal for its lifetime .
A sanctuary animal is a animal that arrived with a severe medical or physical health problem, which at this point maybe resolved or resolving but long-term prognosis dictates that lifelong issues both the same or even different issues may arise as the animal ages. In many cases, an animal born with a genetic disability has other underlying medical health issues that slowly surface as the animal ages. In this situation we have found in the past that most adopters cannot manage emotionally or financially to deal with these as many can progress to life-threatening issues.
We do not feel it is fair to the animal to be rehomed again and again due to issues being unmanageable. . Moving animals from home to home is very emotionally upsetting to the animal as well as put a strain on their physical health . . Sadly in a few cases a adopted animal had a bad day (don’t we all now and then ) a quick decision was made to euthanize. We spent our resources , time and emotions to rehabilitate these animals . Euthanasia was not warranted . We certain believe in a good quality of life and would never let a animal suffer ! We are able to mange those rough days get thru them and once again have a happy ,pain free animal .
A few examples of animals that are at the sanctuary, who are perfect example are .
Bailey , a liver shunt Yorkie who was an owner surrender and extremely ill when we got her . She required expensive surgery semi successful , her life expectancy went from 2 yrs to 10 yrs . She requires a very strict prescription diet as well as two medications twice daily if not followed she will die .
Zeus our tripod dachshund came to us from a local vet who was asked to euthanize him. In the five years he has been at the sanctuary He has undergone two blood transfusions, two bouts with aspiration pneumonia, and a leg amputation because of cancer. He has a digestive issue requires a special diet and daily medications.
Cats that we accepted with CH issues ( cerebella hemoplaysia ) eventually develop more severe neurological issues including seizures .
All of these animals LOOK perfectly healthy ….
We love each and every animal that passes thru our doors. We are prepared for good days , bad days and all the work it takes to get them thru these difficult times . The average pet owner can not accommodate these issues that arise , it can be AND IS physically, emotionally and financially draining .
A animal must be happy as well as the human caregiver for special needs animal to thrive . Here at the sanctuary we promise each and every animal a full lifetime commitment . We are gifted to have these animals in our heart and our home ( the sanctuary ) and cherish our special needs misfits as we see them as perfectly imperfect!

Tippy aka Tipster ( our parvo puppy) is definitely one of a kind . He still is a two speed puppy … fast forward now at the run or fast asleep !(many times I check him to see he is actually still breathing ) He has a extremely sensitive digestive system requiring a special diet. He will eat willing one day and then not the next , but his weight remains stable even with the ups and downs …Tippys barking habits have not changed 😪. Definitely a night owl . The house will be dark , quiet and calm when the silence is broken by Tippy making it known he has no intention of sleeping so neither should anyone else ….Tippy is fearless as he weighs in at 4 lbs ! He has several times tried to “take down “ Clyde the 160 lb Great Dane . He sleeps ALL day ( because he is up all night) not normal for a young healthy dog but considering he almost died several times we just continue to take each day as it comes . Once again we say thank you to all who contributed to his very expensive medical bills and wanted to post a overdue picture and update .
