When I first started training service dogs, I was given a group of 5 German Shepherds and tasked with training each to be a guide dog. Although they were the same breed and raised for the same job, each had a very distinct personality. This required me to meet each dog where they were at to find success in training them.

17 years later, I still find myself meeting dogs exactly where they are. I used to think it was becoming a different version of myself. I’d think what does this dog need? Does she need me to be quieter when I give commands? Does he need me to encourage him to find the curb on the sidewalk?

I now realize it was never about changing myself to meet them, but learning to access parts of myself that already exist. Each dog we have or train is a chance to learn more about ourselves. There is no doubt our dogs change our lives and us.

Over the years with our dogs our relationship deepens, through experiences, training and everyday life together. Then one day we wake up and realize the space that exists between us and our dogs is not clearly distinguishable. Where do they end and we begin? That’s a beauty of loving and choosing to live your life with a dog (or many😉).

As we shift into this holiday season, Thanksgiving always reminds me to pause and reflect with gratitude. A reminder to slow down, take time for yourself, enjoy the moments with your dogs, pets, family and friends. Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving full of everything you love.🙏🏼💜

I practice yoga with all of my dogs. Even this guy right here. Mav is an intense dog. His favorite command is “GO”. He would prefer we do everything at high intensity, fast and all the time. Teaching him to be calm with me is an important skill and piece to our relationship working together. Mav and I train and trial in the sport American Schutzhund, where part of the judging is on your dog’s attitude, power and your coordination as a team. Adding the element of calm doesn’t necessarily mean we are slowing down or dimming our energy. It’s a sense of steady calm, presence, feeling assured and trusting in each other. We discover this together on our yoga mat and it changes our relationship off our mat and in everything we do. Stepping out on a field to trial or do anything new with our dogs may bring a sense of nervous energy, excitement, increased heart rate, quicker movements…through yoga we learn to meet ourselves in this space. Connecting to our breath and feeling grounded and ultimately calm and ready.

Mav reminds me to go big, shine bright and just go for it!✨

That’s me on the right, with the first dog I ever loved, Sammy. (the other adorable kid is my sister 💕) I think I was born loving dogs. I don’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t have a dog beside me. When I left for college at 18, I left without a dog. Years 18-19 were some of my hardest times. So, at 20 years old, I got a dog of my very own, Fenway. Life made sense again…not to say she was an easy dog, I got her when she was about a year old and I think she came with every behavior problem possible. She taught me so much about dog training but, she taught me even more about myself.

Each dog that comes into our lives teaches us more and if we’re lucky we’ll have a soul dog that teaches us we are capable of anything. I cherish Tao every day, feeling lucky to have her by my side for over 12 years. To imagine a life without her feels impossible but, I know our relationship is forever. Never doubt your dogs are always with you, even if they aren’t here physically. You can feel them on a walk when the sunshine hits you just right, when you are at their favorite beach or in those quiet moments of solitude. I am grateful for each of my dogs along this journey, it’s been 40 years of loving dogs and how lucky are we as humans to share our lives with these amazing beings. 💜

TAO DOG® YOGA...where yoga meets dog training

For many years I have practiced yoga, and for many years I have trained dogs. I have found that teaching dogs to be focused, calm and relaxed can solve many behavior problems. For me, dog training is about creating a strong relationship between a dog and human. In my experience if the person is calm, the dog picks up on their body language and is able to be more successful with impulse control and the dog’s ability to learn increases.

Yoga! What better way for a person to learn to be calm? TAO DOG® YOGA is designed to teach people how to breath, gain mental focus and stretch and strengthen their bodies, all while their dog lies next to them. TAO DOG® YOGA classes and programs allow people to enjoy the benefits of yoga while teaching their dog important skills such as relaxation, relationship building and connection. The dogs also benefit from the training and their own series of stretching and conditioning exercises.

I look forward to sharing TAO DOG® YOGA with people and their dogs. See you on your mat!
