Maple Grove Rabbitry

Maple Grove Rabbitry A family rabbitry in central Indiana that focuses on small breed rabbits. We show our rabbits year round. Our rabbits are for show and for pets.

We also use our rabbits for Ag education visiting school classrooms and camps.

Someone needed a bath today. And they were so good they stayed in the basket to dry off while I fed everyone else.

This is Tommy Girl, a chestnut Netherland Dwarf, she needs an indoor home. She broke her leg as a young kit and we didn’t know it until it healed wrong. She is sweet and loves pets. She gets around fine. She is full size at 2.7 pounds and has bold eyes. She has raised two singletons.

I cannot say “Preach” loud enough.

Words of Wisdom from Karin Humfleet and Melanie Evans:

“This is long but soooo important. This is for anyone who is wanting to buy a rabbit in Georgia, although I’m sure this applies to all other states also. You may share this article if posted in it's entirety down to the last line with credits.
There are numerous rabbit breeders in Georgia who sell pet rabbits; some legit, some are not. Some of these are pet rabbit breeders who misrepresent themselves by saying that they can sell you show quality rabbits.
I’ll tell you a few of the worst sales I’ve heard about. Mind you, these are only a few of many stories.
- There is one particular pet rabbit breeder in Georgia who has sold rabbits for years to unsuspecting buyers who want show rabbits and she lies or tells partial truths, telling them that if a rabbit has a pedigree it’s show quality (not true), telling them that she's a show breeder (not true), telling them that she’s selling them a show quality rabbit only for them to enter it in the show and it be disqualified because it’s an unrecognized color or other issue that would be obvious to anyone who has ever shown a rabbit. This person frequently sells to FFA students and 4H kids; she’s part of a large Facebook rabbit group. This has resulted in several new youth exhibitors having their new rabbit being disqualified within minutes of the start of judging at their first show.
- There’s a family in Georgia who have a really persuasive website. They have a reputation for selling unhealthy rabbits. They post photoshopped pictures; they post pictures that show exhibitors with their winnings that infer that the rabbits shown are from their farm but they’re not. They post pictures inferring that they’ve sold rabbits that have won at the Perry Fair ( I can tell you that there have only been 3 secretaries, the two of us and one other, taking entries for the Perry Fair shows for the last 20 years or more – and none of those secretaries have taken entries from the people shown on their website). They sell “special” feed at ridiculous prices, stating that this feed must be fed to the rabbits that they sell. They’ve recently sold a pet rabbit for $400 to an unsuspecting buyer
- Earlier this year, in a neighboring state, an exhibitor who wasn’t familiar with the different lops, purchased a “show quality holland lop” from someone who has a page that advertises pet and show quality rabbits. The rabbit sold for $100 (a ridiculous price for a pet rabbit and a reasonable price for a top show quality holland lop). It was entered as a holland lop at a show a few weeks later and the judge disqualified the rabbit, stating that it had “so few holland qualities he can’t even call her a holland”. It was a poor example of a mini lop or a mixed breed lop.
- There have been numerous cases of “pet” breeders who steal photos from top national exhibitor’s pages and pass them off as their own on their own pages.
Breeders will tell you that if a rabbit is pedigreed, it is show quality. This is absolutely false. Pedigrees in the rabbit world are easily “created” or falsified. When purchasing a show quality rabbit, you should receive a pedigree but pedigrees are NOT necessary for showing.
We hear numerous stories from people who tried to buy a show quality rabbit from someone who told them they sell show quality animals, only to find out that the variety they bought isn’t an accepted variety for showing, that the rabbit they bought is a mixed breed, that the rabbit they bought is cute but was sold by a pet breeder who doesn’t have a clue what makes a rabbit “show quality.” Some pet breeders are just unaware of the differences between pet rabbits and show quality rabbits; some are con artists.
*****We’ve said this before but it needs to be repeated. If you want a show quality rabbit, you really need to buy a rabbit from someone while attending a rabbit show. This indicates that the seller is actually a person who shows rabbits, instead of a person who SAYS they show rabbits when they’ve actually only attended a show once in ten years, or not at all. You can also get help from show staff to find a reputable breeder to help you find the right rabbit and the right breed. You can contact us or any of the officers of the Georgia State RCA to ask for help or direction. It is so important that we all work together to protect new members of our hobby, especially the youth, by guiding them toward REPUTABLE breeders, AND by exposing those individuals who would hurt our hobby for their personal financial gain.”
