Although the Russian Blue has a short coat, it is thick and dense, which helps them adapt to the frigid Russian climate. And although their coat is short and thick, they shed very little. What’s even more interesting is that the Russian Blue cat breed tops the list of “hypoallergenic” cat breeds. While it’s true that no cat–or even dog for that matter–is truly “hypoallergenic”, it is true that Russian Blue cats have lower levels of Fel d 1, the protein in cat saliva and skin secretions responsible for your itching and wheezing.

The name Ojos Azules translates to “blue eyes” in Spanish, and the Ojos Azules cat name is fitting because these felines feature beautiful eyes that are a deep blue color.

This breed dates back to 1984 when a tortoiseshell female cat named Cornflower from a feral colony in New Mexico had kittens. Those kittens featured the same intense blue eyes that she had, thereby proving that this unique trait was a dominant trait that could be reproduced.

What is interesting about the Ojos Azules cat is the fact that the gene that causes the intense blue eyes does not appear to be linked to any particular coat pattern or color. So you could, for example, have Ojos Azules cats with blue eyes and dark coats.

This handsome boy is a Toyger. In the 1980s, a cat breeder noticed one of her cats had tabby markings on their temple, and she believed the markings would be beneficial for creating a cat with a circular pattern on the head, similar to the markings of a tiger.

She mated a domestic shorthair, Scrapmetal, and a Bengal, Millwood Rumpled Spotskin.

The breeder, Judy Sugden, sought to develop cats that appeared as miniature tigers. Temperament was also important, and the cats in her line were laid-back and friendly.

The Toyger was registered in 2000 and received full recognition in February 2007.

Turkish Angora has beautiful, long, silky fur. Aside from the well-known solid white coat, the Turkish Angora is available in 20 different colors and in various patterns (tortoiseshell, calico and tabby). They are one of a few breeds that have no undercoat; meaning their fur rarely matts and therefore requires less maintenance than many long haired breeds. Turkish Angoras can have blue, green, amber or gold-colored eyes. However, eyes of two different colors (like this gorgeous kitty) known as odd-colored eyes are common too. The Turkish Angora is a natural breed (it is not created via cross-breeding) and it is generally very healthy because of this.

In 1950, a woman named Nina Ennismore who lived in Cornwall, England, discovered that her domestic British shorthair had given birth to a quirky-looking male kitten with tightly curled fur. As the cat grew older, he also developed big, bat-like ears, and a body reminiscent of an English Greyhound.

Rumors swirled that radiation from the local tin mines had caused the kitten's odd appearance. However, Ennismore, who named the kitty Kallibunker, consulted with a geneticist, who told her that Kallibunker's odd appearance stemmed from a genetic mutation. Kallibunker sired more curly-haired kittens, and voila—a new breed was born.

This little sweetie pie is a lilac Burmese. Her coloring will darken a little in time giving her a lilac-y hue. Other colors you will find in the breed are dark copper brown and chocolate.

Kirlee, a kitten born in Devon, England, in 1959. As suggested bu his name was born with a wavy coat. Little is known of his ancestry. His mother was a stray, and his father was thought to be a roaming tom who also had a curly coat.

Kirlee became the first of a new breed, the Devon Rex, named for his birthplace of Devonshire, as well as his curly coat, which had a texture reminiscent of that of a rex rabbit. Less than a decade later, in 1968, a Devon Rex had emigrated to the United States. The Cat Fanciers Association gave the breed full recognition in 1979.
