In 1930, an innovative experiment was conducted to explore the relationship between music and milk production in cows. A band serenaded a group of cows as part of a scientific study, aiming to determine if musical influence could enhance the amount of milk produced. Researchers hypothesized that the type of music played could affect the cows' stress levels, ultimately impacting their milk yield. This unconventional approach to animal husbandry highlighted the growing interest in understanding animal behavior and welfare during this period.

The results of the study revealed that cows have distinct musical preferences, with classical music appearing to have a calming effect on them. According to research from the University of Leicester, slow tunes were particularly favored by the animals, leading to increased milk production as an indicator of their relaxed state. Songs like “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel and Beethoven’s “Pastoral Symphony” emerged as favorites, demonstrating that certain melodies could create a soothing atmosphere for the cows.

Conversely, the study found that fast-paced music, defined as having over 100 beats per minute, had the opposite effect. Upbeat tunes were shown to elevate stress levels in cows, which negatively impacted their milk output. This research not only contributed to our understanding of animal welfare but also sparked further inquiries into how music can be utilized in agricultural settings to improve productivity and enhance the overall well-being of livestock. The findings continue to inform best practices in dairy farming today, emphasizing the importance of creating a stress-free environment for these animals.

Simple things.
I can’t control the drought, or world peace.
But simple things?
I can control that.
Not the best looking splice I have ever done, but it sure is one of them.
Now to find that bag of clips I dropped somewhere.

It was actually hot this afternoon while I was clearing up the mess from this morning.
When I was finished, the girls thought I was kidding when I called them to eat some feed this evening. It took me a few extra whistles to get them to come and eat.
When they realized I was really calling them, they kicked up a lot of dust.
This drought is bad. That is why I wanted to make sure they received their daily ration of feed.
Fortunately we still have some grass, but the cattle are eating about a hay bale a week.
I had not planned on feeding hay this early, so I am rethinking my needs for winter when I am feeding four to five bales a week.
They barely touched their lick tubs from spring through July. But they have almost finished two 225lb Purina Rangeland 16% protein lick tubs during the last two weeks. That gets expensive.
Livestock through the drought areas are struggling.
Pray for rain friends. Pray for rain.

Well……
Certainly not how I wanted to start my morning.
But things could be much worse and it’s just part of farm life.
The cows were not happy because their feed bunks were blocked off.
I think they will get an evening snack instead.
