Hi everybody!
I’ve taken a long break from my training business in order to welcome these two beautiful babies to the world. Delilah and Calvin have most definitely kept me busy! I’m extremely grateful to be able to stay home with them, but I’m also ready to start taking on a few training clients again! I’ll have a few slots available, either in the evenings Tuesday-Saturday, or any time of day Sunday and Monday. At this time, I’ll only be taking 2-4 clients per week. My husband and I are also considering offering p**p scooping and/or dog walking throughout the week.
Please reach out to me if you’re interested in any of these services, and please share this post if you know anybody who might be looking for some dog training!

Hi everyone! Cute picture of Jynx just to grab attention for an announcement!

As some of you know, I’m currently pregnant with our second baby, due in December. We’re so excited!! That being said, I’m currently having some complications with this pregnancy and trying to be extra cautious. With that and coronavirus, I’ve decided to not take any new clients on at the moment. At this point in time, I’m not sure when I’ll be open to new clients but it might not be until after the baby is here.

I am happy to answer any training questions I can over messenger. If you’re looking for in person training, I highly recommend my friend and fellow trainer, James Brown, who is currently taking new clients. Please contact him at 786-858-0068.

Why I smile when my dog growls at me

Sadly a growling dog is often punished. As humans, many of us see growling as a bad behaviour. We often associate growling with aggression. It can make us feel angry, upset and sad that our dogs are not always loving towards us, like so many dogs who are portrayed through books and films.

But growling is just a way for them to communicate how THEY are feeling. It's rarely personal, it's not because they want to bite, its also doesn't mean they dislike you. They are just asking for space, telling you they are scared, uncomfortable, in pain, would rather you not take something off them that they perceive as theirs, worried, feeling unsafe.

It's no different than us saying we don't feel like a hug, asking someone to not steal our food, favourite piece of jewellery or possession. It's no different than us saying back off, I'm frightened or I am not doing that because it makes me feel uncomfortable or scared.

When we tell a dog off for growling, when we tap them on the nose, when we shout at them we are telling them we are not listening. That we don't understand what they are trying to say, that we don't respect how they are feeling.

By not listening many dogs will then shout louder, try harder to be heard. They may shut down, even stop growling, but this will just be due to being too scared to show how they feel. This can lead to lack of trust in you, doing something because they are fearful of you. Or their growling may get worse, they may start air snapping, desperately asking you to hear them. They may even end up biting, feeling that they must increase their communication, that they have no other option left to them.

If we listen to the growl we can start to better manage their environment so they are not put in situations that worry or scare them. We can start teaching them that what we are asking of them is a good thing. We can give them space if they need it. We can start building trust.

When Toby first came to us his first behaviour of defence was to show all his teeth, lunge at you and even bite. He looked like a poster dog of aggression. He scared me. But we managed his environment, made him feel safer and we listened. Over time his communication became more subtle, he started to growl, gave us a warning that he was feeling unsafe. When he first started to do this I was so happy, he made me smile, I knew we were getting somewhere. Now he rarely growls. He will lick his lips or give me a little glance to ask me to stop. He trusts that I'll listen.

So please try not to be angry or upset if your dog growls. Stop and listen and if it is worrying you then please contact a canine behaviour practitioner to support you. We have the right to tell others to back off when we feel unsafe and so do they.

This is a picture of Toby and his new friend Michelle. He chooses to spend time with her. His circle of trust is getting bigger and I couldn't be happier 😊

To all of my current clients: please feel free to message me whenever you feel ready to continue lessons. I am starting in-person classes back up now! I will also be working on getting in touch with everyone myself, over the next week or so. If you would still like to postpone for awhile, that is completely ok as well.
I hope that you’re all doing well and giving your pups lots of love from me!

Announcement for anyone interested in an online course!
I will be setting up two Facebook groups soon; one for a basic obedience course and one for a trick course. I will post six videos (one a day or every couple of days) and each video will be one lesson. I’ll post down below what each course’s lesson will cover. I will be available in both groups to answer any questions or concerns you may have and to guide you however I can.
As I know that these are hard times for many, these courses will be primarily on a what you can pay basis. I’m requesting $25-50 as my work and all of my in-home lessons have shut down, so I’m hoping to help my family out, but if that’s not something you’re able to do and you’re wanting to do one of these courses, please still message me to discuss options. I would love to help you and your pup out in anyway that I can.
If you are interested in either group, or in both groups, please send me a message and answer the following questions:
1. What kind of dog do you have and how old are they? (Bonus points if you add a picture 😉)
2. How much exercise, and oh what kind, does your pup get each day?
3. What kind of training have you done in the past?
4. Which course are you interested in?
5. What would you most like for your pup to learn?

Basic obedience will cover:
1. Sit, down, and stay
2. Name game, recall
3. Focus, touch, heel/get with me
4. Loose leash walking
5. Wait, leave it
6. Problem behaviors: barking, jumping

Tricks:
1. High five, shake, spin and twirl
2. Over and under, weave legs
3. Crawl, paws up, get with me
4. Touch my hand, a target stick, and a sticky note
5. Games: shell game, find it
6. Kisses, peekaboo, roll over *

*roll over is Jynx’s biggest challenge. I’ve taught roll over to tons of other dogs, but Jynx hates it 🤦🏼‍♀️ So we’ll be attempting this with you guys 😂

The Cup Game!
I just started training Jynx to play the cup game yesterday and thought I would share it with you guys as a fun way to bond with your dog and give them some mental stimulation while we’re stuck home.
Please let me know what you guys think and if you would like to see more games or things like this on my page. Feel free to share this, as well!
Also, please ignore the Hercules music in the background 😂

Social Distancing And Dogs

I hope this article finds you all in good health. With all of the recent health concerns and the recommended “social distancing,” many people have been keeping to themselves and staying at home, but just like us, dogs can struggle with the isolation from the world and develop unhealthy mindsets.

Dogs are predators by nature. They were bred to chase, hunt, forage, scavenge, and move as a pack. While we may be acing the pack aspect by staying home with them each day, we may be neglecting their other behavioral needs.

When dogs don’t get the proper mental outlets (obedience training, trick training, jobs to do, hunting for food, etc.), physical outlets (tug, fetch, walking, running, treadmill, etc.), and social outlets (exposure to people, dogs, sounds, smells, places, etc.), their mental stability can decline.

If these needs and drives are not fulfilled in the dog, we typically see issues like anxiety, aggression, and reactivity take their place. Sometimes these arise simply from frustration on the part of the dog. Sometimes they are a result of the dog losing the life skills it had learned to adapt to a human world. Either way, these behaviors can be stressful for both dog an owner.

Unfortunately, with stress and behavioral issues usually comes additional isolation. Owners grow increasingly wary about taking their anxious, reactive, or aggressive dogs out for activities (even something simply like playing fetch if the dog is playing more rough than usual.) But isolation feeds the fire, and behavioral issues will only increase the more we restrict the dog from its natural tendencies.

If you find yourself at home with your dog over these next few months, try to make sure the dog’s needs are being met each day. If your dog seems more anxious, do more. If you dog seems more reactive, do more. If your dog seems more aggressive, do more. If your dog is having potty accidents, fence fighting, barking, whining, digging, chewing, bolting, DO MORE.

Sometimes we take for granted the stoic nature of dogs. They don’t tell us when and where it hurts. They don’t always communicate with us in a way we understand. And sometimes they are genuinely struggling and asking for help the only way they know how. Take the time to listen, and your dog will love you for it.

This is a great way to spend time with your dog while you might be stuck at home!

Thank your dog.

One of the most common questions I get asked is “how do I get my dog to stop barking?” This is always asked in an exasperated tone. People ask this while laughing and rolling their eyes, as if they don’t think there’s any possible solution. There’s no way I can tell them how to get their dog to stop barking at the door, at passing cars, at people walking their dogs past their house. Dogs just bark, right?

Dogs do bark. They bark to alert us of something going on that they think we should know about. They bark to communicate. The solution is simple, really.

Just thank your dog.

Maybe I sound crazy. But I can tell you from experience, this works.

Our back door looks out on a community dog park. Jynx used to bark continuously, every time a dog was let out there to run. Every time somebody walked past with their dog. Every time a kid rode their bike on the path right out our back door.

Then I started talking to him, thanking him for letting me know what was going on.

“Thank you, Jynx! Yes, I can see that puppy playing fetch! What a cute dog, right, Jynx? Oh, look, there’s a kid riding their scooter! Doesn’t that look fun!”

I’ll even show him when I notice a dog or a kid before he alerts. I might sound insane to anybody who can hear me through our open window, but hey, my dog doesn’t bark like a maniac anymore. He maybe barks once or twice when he sees something really exciting, and we’ve only been practicing this for a few weeks. I’ve talked to tons of other people who have used this method and gotten their dogs to stop barking as well.

Dogs bark to communicate. All we need to do is reciprocate that communication. It’s simple, really.

I love these pups! And their humans are absolute rock stars!
Zoey and Meena had their class at Home Depot tonight, working on paying attention to their kids with distractions all over. They did amazing! I love seeing how much Cash and Cali work with them. They work so hard to achieve their goals and Zoey and Meena have made such amazing progress in the four weeks I’ve been working with them.
