My favorite girl, Maggie Monster, is all grown up and I’m still not over it!

Dewclaws Matter!

They aren’t just loose skin and a nail that serves no function and doesn’t benefit the dog- like once previously thought!
They’re attached by bone, muscle, tendons, and many ligaments, just like the other toes.
They serve a purpose.
Removing them changes how your dog moves.

🏃‍♂️ They Stabilize the Leg During Movement
When a dog is running, jumping, pivoting, or climbing, the dewclaw makes contact with the ground as seen in the photo!
It helps:
• Prevent twisting injuries
• Improves traction
• Stabilize the carpal joint( the wrist)
• Keep tendons and ligaments aligned under pressure!

⚠️ Dewclaw Removal Can Increase Injury Risk
Dogs without dewclaws often compensate in unnatural ways.
This can lead to:
• Arthritis in the wrist
• Carpal injuries
• Muscle strain
• Long-term structural weakness
• Damage to the left over bone!
Working and sporting breeds rely on dewclaws the most — including Golden Retrievers!

💅They NEED to be Properly Maintained
The belief that dewclaws “catch on things” comes from neglect. When trimmed regularly, the risk is extremely low — and the benefits of keeping the dew FAR outweigh any benefits of removing them.

✨ Bottom Line

Dewclaws aren’t optional. They are essential!
They’re functional anatomy, essential for joint health, stability, performance, and long-term soundness.
Responsible breeders and educated veterinarians increasingly advocate for keeping them intact and we will too!

The actual amount of blood sweat and tears that go into this is insane.
• The sleepless nights
• The heartbreak when you inevitably loose newborns
• The constant communication and paperwork
• The funds you have to have to even begin
• The hope you have in dogs that end up not working out
• The hours of training, trialing, getting up more times than you fall down not to mention the judgement that goes along with all of that.
• And don’t even get me started on the cleaning 💀

It’s a lot- more than the average person realizes, but this mission, to improve the breed and raise some incredible puppies for families who need them, is worth it.

To the boy who started it all, he may not be leaving behind the legacy I initially planned for, but without him none of this would have been possible.

The answer is NEVER!

Training doesn’t stop when the “puppy phase” ends.
Your dog is always learning ( even when you don’t want them to) every day, in every environment, through every interaction with you.

We often think of training as something we do for a few weeks or months or when we’re working through a specific challenge, but in reality, training is a relationship. It’s communication. It’s choosing to guide, lead, and teach throughout every stage of their lives, over and over again as they grow and their needs change.

Your dog learns from:
✨ The routines you follow
✨ The boundaries you enforce (or don’t)
✨ The way you respond to their excitement, frustration, joy, and stress!
✨ The patience and consistency you show up with

A well-mannered adult dog didn’t just “evolve.” They were taught, reinforced, and supported throughout their life.

So, let’s celebrate the small wins.
Revisit skills.
Keep showing up as their person.
Because training isn’t a one-time event… it’s a lifelong partnership and part of the commitment you make when brining home a puppy.

🥂 Cheers to training- forever and always 🤪

Socialization is CRUCIAL!!

Raising a puppy isn’t just about teaching sit, stay, and potty training, it’s about shaping who they become as an adult dog. Socialization is the process of exposing your puppy to the world in a safe, positive, and structured way so they grow into a confident, stable adult!

But here’s the 🔑

👉 socialization is NOT just “letting the puppy meet lots of dogs and going places.” 🙅‍♀️

✅ Healthy Socialization Looks Like:

• Introducing new environments at the puppy’s pace and prioritizing observation over interaction with their environment.
• Exposure to different surfaces, sounds, textures, and objects
• Meeting calm, puppy- safe, stable dogs and people
• Letting your puppy people watch from a distance
• Rewarding engagement and focus on you, rather than strangers or other dogs
• Encouraging neutrality, plenty of time for making friends later
• Creating positive experiences, not overwhelming ones
This builds puppies who:
• Think before reacting
• Walk confidently in new places
• Can ignore distractions
• Trust their handler
• Adjust well to change and new situations

❌ Poor Socialization Looks Like:

• Throwing the puppy into chaotic environments such as dog parks, busy stores, loud events, day cares, play groups etc.
• Forcing interactions with every dog or person
• Allowing over-excitement to be the norm
• Letting strangers interact freely with them
• Over-exposing without structure or boundaries
• Forcing them to meet new people or check out new things if they’re unsure or scared
This often leads to:
• Reactivity (barking, lunging)
• Anxiety or fearfulness in public
• Difficulty focusing
• Trouble settling
• Over-stimulation and impulsive behavior

💪🏽 The goal of socialization should always be neutrality!

🤍A well-socialized dog is not hyper-friendly.
🤍A well-socialized dog is confident, neutral, and stable.
🤍A well-socialized dog is be able to exist in the world calmly.

Socialization is a lifetime practice, but it starts the moment your puppy comes home. 🐶🏡

Puppy Raising Hot Tips:

She’s 18 months! My little monster is almost grown up and I can’t take it, she’s truly been one of my favorite puppies I’ve ever raised! It hasn’t been 100% smooth sailing but there are a few things I’ve done to make puppy raising easier over the years.

• Crate Training! - it’s not mean, it’s essential! Especially for young puppies who need frequent breaks and up to 20 hours of sleep a day.
• One on One training sessions, no other dogs involved or near, just me and the puppy.
• Short sessions, just five minutes a few times a day is enough.
• Taking it slow, Instagram can be deceiving, and you’ll see accounts where these tiny puppies seem to have it all down and know everything there is to know, don’t let it fool you. Go at your own pace and train the dog you have.
• Proper socialization, this could be an entire post all on its own, but observation over interaction is key!

And last but not least- find a trainer you like that can help you along the way!

Littermate Syndrome isn’t a myth!

This can happen when puppies, either littermates or even puppies close in age, rely on each other so strongly that they struggle to develop into confident, balanced, independent adult dogs!

When two puppies (especially siblings) grow up together without structured separation and individual training, they often bond primarily to each other instead of to their human family. This can lead to lifelong behavioral challenges.

These challenges may look like:
• Extreme anxiety when separated from their sibling
• One pup becoming overly dependent and the other more dominant
• Difficulty focusing during training (they tune you out & tune into each other)
• Reactivity, fearfulness, or low confidence
• Resource guarding between the two
• Slower social development with humans and outside dogs

So what if you already have littermates or puppies close in age?
• Crate them separately
• Walk them separately
• Feed them separately
• Train them 1-on-1, and out of sight of the other
• Take them on separate outings, classes, meet ups etc
• Rotate individual play and enrichment time
• Encourage confidence away from the sibling

Two pups doesn’t always mean double the fun, raising siblings is possible but it requires extra time, structure, training, and patience to make sure both dogs can grow into confident, emotionally healthy adults. 🤍
