Losing a giant breed dog leaves a huge void—physically and emotionally. These gentle giants become part of our daily routines, filling every corner of our lives. When they’re gone, the quiet and emptiness feel overwhelming.

It’s not just their size but the deep bonds we build. Their thundering footsteps, big cuddles, and daily presence become part of us. When they’re suddenly missing, the silence is deafening.

Coping looks different for everyone, but honoring their memory can help. Keeping their collar, framing a favorite photo, or sharing their stories with loved ones can bring comfort. Talking about them keeps their spirit alive.

Giving back can also be healing—whether through volunteering, fostering, or donating in their honor. When the time is right, welcoming another pet can be a way to carry their love forward.

Why do they call it the Rainbow Bridge? The thought came to mind as we share the heartbreaking news that we’ve said goodbye to our Lucy. After some Googling, we learned that the term comes from a poem written in the 1980s, describing a beautiful meadow where pets wait for their humans, healthy and whole again, before crossing the bridge to heaven together. It’s a comforting image—one that speaks to the deep bond we share with our dogs, a love that doesn’t fade even when they’re no longer by our side.

No words feel quite right. Lucy was more than our dog. She was the heart of The Big Damn Dog Co. She inspired everything we’ve built here—the mission, the community, and the commitment to giving big dogs more, better years. If you’ve ever connected with our brand, seen her in our posts, or read about her in our emails, then in some small way, you’ve known Lucy, too.

Her legacy will live on in everything we do in love and support of big dogs like her. She will remain a presence within the Co., now and forever.

So, what do you need to know to keep your gentle giant happy, healthy, and not taking over your entire couch? Here’s the rundown:

🐕 1️⃣ They’re Not Just Big—They’re Built Different
✔️ Joints matter. Big dogs grow fast and put extra stress on their joints, so proper nutrition and targeted supplements are key.
✔️ They take up space. If you think they’ll stay off the couch, that’s adorable—double down on the training or make peace with the fact that they own your furniture now.

🍖 2️⃣ Feed for Function, Not Just Fullness
✔️ Giant breed pups need slow, steady growth. No overfeeding. Fast growth = joint issues later.
