Today, we are presenting a brief history on the Old English Bulldog breed.

The Old English Bulldog, originating in 1600s England for bull-baiting, nearly went extinct when the sport was banned in 1835. Enthusiasts revived the breed with a focus on health and temperament.

Yale University’s Handsome Dan, the first live college sports mascot, began in 1889. Andrew Graves, a Yale student, bought the original Handsome Dan, creating a tradition of mascots symbolizing Yale’s spirit and pride. Handsome Dan XIX continues this legacy, embodying the breed’s fierce yet friendly nature.

The University of Georgia’s mascot, Uga, started in 1956 with Uga I, owned by Sonny Seiler. Each Uga, a direct descendant of the original, wears a red jersey and is central at Georgia Bulldogs’ events, representing the university’s tenacity and loyalty.

Yale and Georgia have popularized the Old English Bulldog, showcasing its evolution from a fighting dog to a beloved mascot, highlighting its adaptability and enduring appeal.

They are tied-to-the-hip brothers who listen to their mommy and daddy, protect the house, and give the best kisses and snuggles. This was them yesterday in their lush green backyard, exercising and enjoying time with their uncle.
