Another first ride from Thais morning. We are happy with how all these horses are doing! Just gotta keep those feet moving!
We did a couple good first rides on some c**ts today. This is our favorite way to get them ridden the first few times because they’re not having to do anything that they’re uncomfortable with. They’re just doing it with a little extra weight. We’ve had huge success with this
More work on feet and kicking. He’s being so good now
We try not to let it come to this but kicking is a bad habit that gets people hurt and killed so we take it pretty seriously. This always helps the kicking thing. He’s doing a lot better about it. Sucks to kick your own face.
On and off a bunch. This horse does not much like things around her. Steady work is paying off she’s relaxing a bit and letting us crawl on her. Maybe we will ride her tomorrow
These have sure taken a while to get to trust us. But we are starting to climb on them a bit. Hopefully we will have them rode soon!
Personally we find that if you move their feet while you’re starting this process of getting them used to having a rope tugging on the saddle they do a lot better standing still.
Get them moving nicely and relaxed before you do though and it’ll be easy
Last week getting one ready to halter break and saddle. These are some nice c**ts that came all the way down from Colorado! We are blessed
This is pretty common practice for any c**ts. Makes them pretty nice later on when you get a leg over them and have to go rope stuff.
This is a nice two year old. Halter broke for a week and riding around on the first ride like a seasoned pro. Not all horses are gonna be this chill. Some take longer than others. We love working with all of them!
We especially love setting them up for success
I do apologize for this rather unprofessional unedited video, but I am not tech savvy and I don’t normally work horses with my phone in my hand lol
I might add to my commentary that I started this horse early spring, and then let her sit until last week. She’s a known “outlaw” type.
We are taking it slow and trying to work through some of the issues. I can climb on her both sides and get her feet moving pretty reliably but usually that’s only after she bucks around for a minute.
This is the first time she didn’t do that after I put a saddle on her, I’m pretty happy about that.
Folks just know that your horse will be taken care of the same way. If they buck or have issues, we will work through it. Sometimes it takes longer than others. There are Colts out there that I ride on the first day of training sometimes the second or third day. Sometimes it takes two weeks to get on their back safely. You just gotta go at their pace.
Two years ago before I had my daughter, I would just climb on this sucker and have a grand old time with it But hell, I got a mortgage to pay a wonderful wife to support and a daughter to raise. I’m not doing that anymore lol
Getting stuff done in the leather shop. Can’t wait to get down to Oklahoma in a few weeks and start riding outside horses for the public again! Meanwhile just doing a few leather projects to pass the time
Good morning clients and dear friends,
We are jumping on here today to announce some exciting news! We are MOVING! Rowland Equine Services will now be operating on our own little chunk of land in McCurtain, Oklahoma. We will be looking to take in some client horses for August and beyond, with the potential to start as soon as July. Please send a PM to get a training slot reserved.
We will be running our small cattle operation as well so c**ts can be well exposed to ranching concepts. We also will have our roping dummy and CowTrac available.
Thanks for all the support and continued business over the years, you have all helped us make this dream life a reality!
Good morning dear friends and clients. We're excited to announce our intent to move across the country....again! This time headed down south to the Oklahoma area. We have our eye on a property in McAlester that we expect will work out. That puts us down there in 2-3 months. Dan will be back to training full time once we get down there so keep your eye here on the business page for updates and availability!
Thank you all for the years of support.
Well folks, summer is out and fall is in.
We are looking forward to cooler mornings and the business of fall gather season! That being said, we are ready to start booking a couple of c**ts per month now through November.
At this time, we are looking for horses that have had at least 1 ride and are sound and shod at dropoff. Fall time means long hard days so please consider that before offering to send your 2 year olds.
We so look forward to meeting some faces this season!
We’ve decided to make the official announcement…..
Rowland Equine is proud to introduce you to the newest (future) addition to the business!
We are due 1/7/23
Since we are now unexpectedly one trainer short, please bare with us as we plan to downsize the original training schedule. We will do our best to accommodate clients that have reserved spots but we may need to do some moving around with training slots.
Thank you all for your continued support and understanding! We welcome this new start in our lives with great joy.
ATTENTION REINERS!!
Smart, not spooky whatsoever, and
✨ S P I C Y ✨ in true red mare fashion.
We just got in this fun little sorrel filly with a pedigree to make someone a really nice little prospect. We’ll post some nice photos and videos shortly but please keep an eye on the page as we begin to offer her to the public 🙂 please keep in mind, this is a very young horse and will require someone confident to continue her training
HOT DAMN!
Check out this handsome gelding. “Cody” has just joined us for the month to get tuned up and he is AVAILABLE. We will be posting pictures and videos this month.
Don’t hesitate to inquire!
A sweet client horse that came in for 30 days. We so enjoyed Fiona while she was here.
Reading comments on all of videos sure makes me wish training horses was as easy as all the armchair experts claim it is!
Clients and friends,
We have been putting off making this post for as long as we possibly could but it seems that it’s finally time…..
We are so sorry to announce that we will be raising our monthly training price. With diesel continuing to increase and hay prices doing the same, we simply can not continue to do what we do without moving up with the times.
Those of you that are currently booked this summer: we will get ahold of you to chat about the price increase and give you the opportunity to voice your concern. We would love to honor the original quoted price but unfortunately that’s just not in the cards.
Thank you all for your understanding! It’s a tough economic year and it’s only going to get worse.
We had a fun day around the ranch yesterday! Here’s a fun little story the local news asked to do on our training program.
Featuring client horse Goose and our personal project Goose. Thanks Kennedy!

“It's almost like children in school, each one is going to have different ambitions and goals and trainability and different temperaments. You know, in 30 days, we are usually pretty confident saying that we will be riding, getting on the back of something.
Colts seem to really like it out here
Finally got a good video to show how sweet Goose really is. No more spinning or bucking. He just rides out nicely on a loose rein.
This horse is really a pleasure to ride. Tylor has been doing all the riding on him and he has always been a gentleman for her!
Bunny hopping Theo has come a long ways this month!
This nice sorrel gelding came to us at the beginning of April when the trainer who had him for 45 days basically said that he wasn’t interested in riding him anymore and that Theo was always threatening to buck.
Well, as it turns out he did want to buck! We spent several days doing some desensitization and confidence building before climbing on. He had a couple of bucks to get out. And ever since he’s been a great horse.
We love to see such quick progress. Good boy Theo!
Here’s a little throwback to a big bay mare that came in for 60 days. We restarted her and this was the result before she went home.
Thanks again to all our awesome clients that bring us equally awesome horses.
The ole grey bronc is making a horse
I think this is a great time to share an old video. Here is a first saddling for a recently gelded c**t.
Notice a difference between this horse and the other grey that we posted? This one we got to start ourselves so we didn’t have to fix old problems.
That being said, horses are individuals. We prepare them the best we can. Sometimes they buck and sometimes they do this. All depends on the horse at hand.
Bunny hopping into easter like..
One of the best parts of starting c**ts is when they really start to search for the answer. In the beginning they lack confidence in you. But at some point they understand that you have an answer that they can find. And their expression changes. They trust you and they want to learn.
This is the expression.
First ride on a client horse that came in with a bucking problem. We’ve done a lot of work with him on the ground to help him get over some of his fears but today it was time to help him from the saddle.
Check the comments for a video of his quick progress!

Clients often ask if we are able to work on softening horses as we also cover country. I think this video shows pretty clearly what we are able to create, even without an arena! This is Curly, a client horse who came in with a lot of nervous habits and a high headset. I’d say he’s figured out pretty well how to soften up and use his body efficiently.
Mouse, our personal filly that was almost exclusively handled by us. Notice that this young horse is happy to stand by her partner by her own choice and not by any physical connection. She is ridden often on the ranch, doing challenging jobs and putting in hard days. Consistent fair handling makes a relaxed, loyal equine partner.
The bronc settled down pretty quick. This is the next day working the feedlot. Just goes to show that sometimes horses buck. And sometimes they buck without the presence of pain. Sometimes they buck because they learned they can. And when they do, your sticky neighborhood Cowboy can ride it out and show your horse that being a good equine citizen is easier and more fun 🙂
Here’s the same filly after a few weeks of steady riding and ranch work. She’s really settling in nicely. This is her first time out doctoring calves. What a smart little horse!
Week one day one. Here’s a clients horse that I’m getting going. She has a bad habit of bucking folks off and leaving them high and dry. Thought I’d post a comparison on what a couple weeks to a month of daily ranch work can do for a horse. I can only post one video at a time though so please bear with me. So here’s the start, first day.
Here is part 1 in a 3 part series of SHORT videos where Dan explains what he’s doing as he rides this young stud colt. There’s still space to get your horse in for training this month and next, send a message to inquire. Please feel free to ask clarifying questions in the comments!
