⁣As we enter into into the new year the foundation would like to thank all of the sanctuaries, zoos, care staff and veterinarians for their tireless efforts to save the lives of so many exotics animals. ⁣

The foundation would also like to thank all of our donors and supporters for without you our missions would not be successful. ⁣

We participated in 13 missions to 9 different sanctuaries in 2023. We treated 98 patients representing 27 different species. We completed 115 extractions, 26 root canals, 36 restorations, 2 biopsies and few gingival procedures. All completed by the hearts, hands and minds of a dedicated few. ⁣

The foundation has a bright future and we look forward to the challenges of 2024 and hope to exceed 2023 totals in our effort to continue living out the legacy of Dr. Peter Emily. 💉💊

Established in 1980, The Wild Animal Sanctuary (TWAS) is a state and federally licensed zoological facility and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our educational facility is located outside of Keenesburg, Colorado, 30 miles northeast of Denver, on 1,214 acres of rural, rolling grasslands, sheltering more than 750 large carnivores! TWAS is the largest and oldest sanctuary of its kind in the World. ⁣

For the past 40+ years, TWAS has responded to more than 1,000 requests from private citizens and government agencies to rescue animals from across the United States and other countries. Their resident animals were abandoned, abused, kept illegally or were victims or other terrible situations. Most were the pets of private citizens, but were confiscated by law enforcement officials for being in illegal or abusive situations. Others were surplus animals from zoos and other wildlife facilities, where they faced euthanasia due to over-breeding, overcrowding or closure due to inadequate finances.⁣

Their 750+ residents include Tigers, African Lions, Black Bears, Grizzly Bears, Mountain Lions, Leopards, Wolves, Hyenas, African Servals, Bobcats, Foxes, Lynx, Coyotes, Coati Mundi, Kangaroos, Wallabies, Raccoon, Ostriches, Emu, Camels, Alpacas, Yaks, Horses, Donkeys and rescued dogs and cats.

If you’re in need or have an emergency will make the trip even on short notice. With a mere two weeks to plan and Dr. Barron Hall () journeyed to treat big cats in need. ⁣

After multiple airline delays they arrived to at 4pm and worked until 8pm on Saturday and then back at it at 7am Sunday. We would like to thank the tireless staff of In-Sync for their commitment to the foundation and willingness to accommodate the late arrival in order to assess and treat their residents. We would also like to thank Dr. Tim Tristan DVM and his team for excellent anesthesia protocols. ⁣

Two lions and a liger were treated and three root canals were completed. All patients are recovering, doing well, and now living with healthy pain-free mouths. We hope next time the airlines cooperate!⁣

On July 1 the foundation traveled to for the first time. “Primarily Primates, Inc. (PPI) is a not-for-profit animal sanctuary in Bexar County, Texas, providing permanent, lifetime care and housing for rescued animals, mostly primates.⁣

The 300+ animals living at PPI in permanent residence have been saved from biomedical research, the pet trade, and/or the entertainment industry. Now, animal residents including chimpanzees, lemurs, small primates, kinkajous, birds, and farmed animals enjoy the peace true sanctuary brings. PPI was founded in 1978, making it the first primate sanctuary in North America and the first to rescue chimpanzees requiring lifetime care following medical research.⁣

PPI cares for each animal individually and holistically, focusing on both physical and psychological health. As a true sanctuary, PPI is not open to the general public and does not breed, sell, trade, or use animals commercially. A community of supporters and collaborators keeps PPI energized and maintained.⁣

PPI is accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and is committed to compassionate and appropriate zoological care. These animals get to live the rest of their lives with dignity, experience proper social environments, and make choices about how they want to spend their days.”⁣

Representing the foundation were Dr. Hall ( )and Dr. Dyer (). Their day began at 8am with the first patient and ended with the 18th patient at 8pm. Multiple extractions, root canals and restorative treatments were rendered. It was an impressive day all made possible by the animal care staff of the sanctuary and impressive anesthesia protocols delivered by . We cannot thank Dr. East and her team for connecting us with this beautiful sanctuary and keeping everyone safe. ⁣

We would encourage and welcome all sanctuaries, zoos, etc…to utilize the expertise and maximize time given by the foundation as seen here. We are here to serve, so let’s work!

We are heartbroken to share that Dr. Peter Emily peacefully passed away early this morning. Dr. Emily was a friend and a mentor to so many and a giant in the field of veterinary dentistry. His work revolutionized how we approach dental disease in animals large and small and has impacted more lives than we can count. And through the foundation that he created he has ensured that rescued exotic animals living in sanctuaries throughout the nation are able to live happier and healthier lives.

His work will live on in all of those whom he trained and mentored and the animals whose lives will be forever changed. You will be missed dearly, Dr. Emily.
