PEIVDF provides life improving advanced veterinary dental care & treatment to US and overseas captive animal facilities & animal sanctuaries, which are under-funded and/or under-staffed from a veterinary perspective.

This past Wednesday there was a Zoom session between three veterinary dentists, a human endodontist and a sanctuary in Central America to discuss performing endodontics on large cats, we mean a Tiger. We are sure Peter Emily the human dentist who was fundamental in organizing the American Veterinary Dental College® would be happy knowing we are all on equal playing fields placing the patient above all else.

Moments like this highlight what makes dentistry and medicine so rewarding. Collaboration across specialties, countries, and professions reminds us that we are all on equal playing fields when the patient comes first.

We think Peter Emily would be smiling knowing his vision continues today — professionals from different backgrounds learning from one another, sharing knowledge openly, and always prioritizing the patient above all else.

At Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation, we are privileged to work beside extraordinary veterinary professionals who volunteer their time and talents to bring advanced dental and surgical care to animals in need — wildlife, zoos and sanctuary residents.

Veterinary medicine is more than a profession — it is a commitment to relieving pain, restoring health, and giving animals the quality of life they deserve.

Today we celebrate every veterinarian making a difference, often behind the scenes, through long hours, difficult cases, and unwavering compassion.

Thank you for being the voice, the healer, and the advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves.

The Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation had the privilege of providing essential oral care to foxes—an incredibly rewarding mission made possible by a team of dedicated volunteers. Special thanks to the University of Illinois for their expert anesthesia support.

Over two impactful days:

April 18: 59 extractions, 11 root canals
April 19: 76 extractions, 8 root canals

Total:
• 135 extractions
• 19 root canals
• 1 toe amputation
• 1 tail amputation

A truly successful effort improving the health and well-being of these animals.

Peter Emily was the first veterinary dental educator at Colorado State University, and we are truly honored that the Department of Dentistry and Oral Surgery has become the steward of his world-class skull collection. This remarkable collection enables us to educate students of all ages, enhance patient care for exotic animal species, and continue Peter’s enduring legacy of learning and discovery.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Naomi Hoyer and Colorado State University for providing this opportunity and for their support in advancing Peter Emily’s lasting impact on veterinary dentistry.

Welcoming Dr. Curt Ritchie to the PEIVDF Board

The Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation is pleased to welcome Dr. Curt Ritchie, DVM, DAVDC, to the Board of Directors.

Dr. Ritchie is a 1996 graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. He began his career practicing mixed animal medicine for five years before purchasing Perkins Road Veterinary Hospital in 2000 with his wife, Jennifer, where they transitioned to focusing on small animal medicine and surgery.

After fifteen years in general practice, Dr. Ritchie’s passion for dentistry led him to pursue a residency through the American Veterinary Dental College. In 2019, he became the only AVDC Board Certified Veterinary Dentist in Louisiana. He currently practices dentistry and oral surgery exclusively four days a week at his hospital, where he moved to minority ownership in 2023.

Dr. Ritchie’s commitment to education and service is extensive. He served as an adjunct professor at LSU for over four years, sponsors the LSU Vet School Dental Club, and maintains a rigorous national speaking schedule. In 2026 alone, he is scheduled to lead 16 Zoom lectures, 5 dinner and lunch presentations, and 14 full-day wet labs. Additionally, he has participated in 8-10 Peter Emily Missions as both a resident and a Diplomate.

Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation Welcomes Dr. Grace Brown, DVM, DAVDC to Board of Directors

The Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Grace Brown, DVM, DAVDC to our Board of Directors. With a distinguished background in veterinary dentistry and a deep commitment to animal health and welfare, Dr. Brown brings valuable expertise that will strengthen our mission and expand our impact.

Dr. Brown currently serves as Medical Director at Lake County Veterinary Clinics and Founder of MN Veterinary Dental Specialists, where she has contributed to advancing small-animal dental care. Her experience in both clinical practice and community engagement aligns closely with our foundation’s goals of supporting veterinary and dental professionals while promoting exotic animal well-being through advanced dental care.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Brown to the board,” said Russell Farrelly, PEIVDF’s Executive Director. “Her insight and passion for exotic dental medicine will be invaluable as we continue to grow our programs and serve our community.”
