Adolescence occurs between six months and 18 months of age—a time when guardians typically struggle the most with their dogs. Some guardians are so overwhelmed and underprepared for this developmental stage of their dog’s life, they choose to surrender the dog to a local shelter or rescue group. In a recent study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science found that the majority of the surrendered dogs (47.7 percent) ) were between 5 months and 3 years of age (M.D. Salman,John G. New, Jr.,Janet M. Scarlett,Philip H. Kass,Rebecca Ruch-Gallie &Suzanne Hetts, 2010)

The neurobiology of adolescence is fascinating, with some key events that alter both the structure and function of the brain.

During canine adolescence, changing s*x hormones effect the animals stress responses. Adolescent dogs have a decreased ability to process information they are receiving from the environment including the presence of dogs, vehicles, people, or really anything around them. They behave in ways that might feel frustrating or upsetting for the dog’s person.

The connectivity between the frontal cortex (responsible for decision making) and amygdala (responsible for emotional processing) decreases, resulting in less behavioral control. We see increased risk taking and more sensitivity to fear.

So what does this mean? This could mean that what was once no big deal to the dog now feels scary; what was once easy to do is now stressful; what once made sense is now confusing. At times, the world can feel like ‘too much’ for the adolescent dog.

As your puppy undergoes this transition into adulthood their inner world is intense, even chaotic. Many pet owners experience an increase in undesirable behavior and find themselves becoming increasingly frustrated. In turn, our own frustration and impatience can cause us to act unpredictably. This adds to our puppy’s inner turmoil. When the inside and the outside are both unpredictable it can be difficult for our dogs to adjust.

If you have an adolescent dog, what can you do? You can give your dog the time and space to observe what is going on around them when on leash at a distance away from the activity when possible. You can give your dog long walks to sniff and explore in nature, giving their brain time to decompress. You can offer your dog a quiet space to sleep so that they can consolidate memories effectively. You can continue training various skills, breaking them down into easier steps that can be generously reinforced.

By understanding what our adolescent dog is experiencing we gain greater compassion and understanding. When we approach adolescence with patience we create a world that is predictable and gentle so our puppies grow up to be their best adult selves.

Why use a muzzle? I think the bigger question is why not? Every dog doesn’t have to wear a muzzle BUT every dog should be trained to wear a muzzle happily. There are so many reasons dogs wear muzzles, you might be surprised to learn many of them aren’t because the dog bites.

There are 2 big reasons I muzzle trained all of my own dogs. The first is because if there is ever an emergency and they are panicked at the vet and we choose to muzzle them, I don’t want them to consider the muzzle as one more trigger. The muzzle should bring only good associations to them. The second is because I own power breeds and I always want the people who come in contact with them to feel comfortable. If for some reason they feel more comfortable interacting with my dog if they are wearing a muzzle, I’m totally fine with that and so are my dogs.

Muzzled dogs aren’t bad dogs, they’re just dogs who have acquired one more skill along the way. Wearing a muzzle is just that, a skill.

PSA 📢📢 Puppies and kittens need a LOT of time, training, and love, and they come with long-term financial responsibilities. Do NOT recommend getting them as gifts for your loved ones without their knowledge. This is a big decision for any person because you are choosing a companion for the rest of the animal's life.

Every year people adopt puppies at Christmas time only to return them 1-4 months later or even a year later. And by then, they are not so tiny and adorable. And haven't been trained, developed poor behavioral habits, and now are much less adoptable. This means they will sit in the shelter, now in the large dog runs instead of the tiny puppy pits.

We want FURVER homes for our animals, not just homes right now. Do what is in the best interest of the animal. We would love for all of our animals to find great homes for the holidays, ones where we know they will be loved forever and be taken care of long-term.

Last night I was sitting on the couch under a blanket. My dog, Portia, was several feet away chewing on a Benebone. She got up and started to gently grab one side of the blanket. I asked her to go chew her bone, which she did for a few moments. She got back up and this time grabbed the blanket and stated pulling it off my lap.

I could have raised my voice and grabbed it back but I realized her behavior was probably her way of communicating she needed to go outside to relieve herself. I was right. Once her need was met, she settled down with her bone.

Next time your dog is "acting up" ask yourself if the behavior might be the dog communicating a need.

DON’T FORCE ME TO BE SOCIAL!
Do we like everyone we meet? Do we all enjoy socialising and spending time with lots of different people? I certainly don’t and refer to myself as a “caninetrovert” – a person that much prefers to spend time with dogs rather than people. Maybe I’m a little different to the “norm”, but be that as it may, we are all individuals with different personality styles and social preferences.

Some of us are extroverts, gaining energy from interacting with people; some of us introverts, who find people draining and need alone time to recharge our social batteries and some of us are somewhere in between.

If we acknowledge that we are all different in this way, we also need to acknowledge and accept that our dogs are similar.

They could be overly affectionate or fiercely independent, approachable or nervous, energetic or laid back, confident or cautious, sociable, tolerant, selective or reactive.

We may be really disappointed when our dogs turn out not to be the socialite we expected them to be.

Some may even see this as a behaviour problem that needs to be “fixed”. Sometimes it can be improved, especially if the cause is from a negative experience, but genetics, breed tendencies, individual personalities, health and age all contribute to tolerance levels and sociability.

Accept your dog for who they are, allow them to choose whether they want to be sociable or not, respect their choices and never force an interaction that your dog is not comfortable with.

ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION?
Distracted dog walkers
The distracted dog walker is obliviously chatting away on their cell phone, listening to music or a podcast while wearing headphones, catching up on the daily news or socializing with other people while they’re not aware of what their dog is doing or what is going on in the environment.

This may not sound like a problem to some people, but it is something that I have a problem with.

I understand that we often need to multi task – there simply doesn’t seem to be enough time in our day to accomplish everything we need to, but walking your dog should not be one of these times.

Some people might say – “but my dog is really friendly, well socialized, gets on well with everyone, is well trained, knows this environment well etc. and I hear that. But another dog might not be – maybe they need space, are reactive, are not sociable, are recovering from an illness, might be terrified of another dog racing straight towards them chasing a ball thrown from a ball launcher….

If distracted dog walkers have no regard for other dogs or other people, they should at least have regard for their own dogs. Walking your dog should be a time of bonding, of relationship, of seeing the environment through the eyes of your dog, of reinforcing or teaching wanted behaviors, of keeping them safe and protected from the unknown.

Leave the multi-tasking for another time – your dog needs you to pay attention.
