Don’t forget to check the weather before you set a trap so a cat doesn’t suffer in the rain.

🐱CATS ARE SUPER SMART!
🐱Feral cats are not adoptable cats. (Don’t take them to the shelter)
🐱Cats that have their ear tipped have already been fixed.
🐱Healthy feral cats have resources and do not want to be removed from them.
🐱Feral cats prefer the outdoors where they can exercise their cat instincts and help humans with rodent control.
🐱We can control the cat population with spay/neuter.
🐱 You don’t need an organization to TNR, anyone can help save cat lives by fixing the cats they see roaming in their communities.
🐱 TNR (Trap Neuter Retun) saves so many lives and it is successful when a community of cat concerned people to make the decision to fix them all!
🐱 There is more information about community cats and TNR On our website KyAnimalWelfare.com.

HOW TO INTRODUCE A BARN CAT TO THIER NEW HOME....

Adult cats may run away from a barn if they are not confined at first.

When introducing a cat to a barn, try to confine the cat(s) in a tack room or something similar for two to four weeks to give them an understanding that their resources are there and you are their caregiver.

Trust your instincts, you will know when the cat(s) are ready for release. A socialized cat will adapt more quickly. A fearful cat will have to be confined for a longer time.

If you already have cats living on the farm, the new cat should be in a place where the current cats can smell and possibly see the newcomer without touching like from a crack under the door. This gives them time to “talk it out” and get use to the newness before they meet. Cats are very territorial, so the new cat will be the subject of great interest until the cat hierarchy is established.

To make the adjustment less stressful, you can providing a litter box during confinement and feeding the cat on the opposite side of the room/area so it give the cat a sense of a safe place.

CARING FOR YOUR BARN CAT....

There is a myth that barn cats won’t catch mice and rats if they are fed. This is absolutely not true! Barn cats should be fed daily and always have fresh water. A heated water bowl could be provided in the winter. Cats are super smart and can find shelter, but providing the ability find to warm shelter in your barn would increase their chances of catching mice.

Feeding your cat nightly with canned food will also draw the cat into the barn at night and help protect it from night predators such as coyotes, raccoons and owls.

In addition to predators, barn cats are more susceptible to parasites and diseases from catching and eating rodents. It is a good idea to deworm twice a year for both roundworms and tapeworms. In addition it is good to vaccinate for rabies, feline leukemia and distemper.

Do you ever wonder where all those cats are coming from??

If the person who decided to take in this cat would have spayed her.... 195 kittens would not have been born in her first 18 months of life. Now do the cat math and try to figure out how many kittens will be born in the next 18 months. 🤭

🐈Cats can get pregnant as early as four months old.
🐈Cats can get pregnant while they are nursing a litter of kittens.
🐈Cats can get pregnant four times a year.
🐈 A male cat can smell a females in heat spray for up to 3 miles away and will travel impregnating any cat that comes along his way making hundreds of extra babies!

🐱Spaying or neutering your cats prevent homeless cats.
🐱Spay/Neutering your cats prevents spraying, yowling and fighting.
🐱 Spay/neutering prevents spreading sickness and sexually transmitted diseases amongst cats.
🐱 Spay/neutering helps cats live longer!
🐱 It is cheaper to spay a cat then it is to raise a litter for six weeks
🐱 By spay/neutering your cat you help reduce the population at our shelters because the cats that are already there have less competition and more likely to find a home.
🐱Spay/neuter SAVES LIVES!

We need information on the community cats arround the Jennings duplex’s. We will be in that area Monday/Tuesday talking to neighbors and working on a plan to TNR.

These duplexes are close to Skyline Mobile home park.... we are still looking to help the people there too.

If you are feeding or know who is feeding cats in this area please let us know so we can work with them to help get all theses cats fixed. Fixing the cats prevents extra mouths to have to feed and it helps control the cat population

We can manage community cats by managing their resources. We want to teach the people that care and are feeding the cats how to be colony caregivers and how to TNR through our program.

01/31/2020

Are you feeding community cats???
BEWARE!! Skunk mating season is HERE!!

01/30/2020

Are you seeing, feeding or trapping community cats?
Please call us. We want to work with you!

What does TNR stand for?

Returning cats to their known resources prevents suffering, saves lives and causes the cats to become working assets in your community without over populating.

01/29/2020

We have had many people tell us there are SEVERAL.... like HUNDREDS of cats in Skyline that need to be trapped for spay/neuter. (We know this because fixed community cats have their ears tipped)

First.... if you are feeding cats, THANK YOU for being compassionate and caring and for not wanting them to suffer. We also appreciate you because we know you are helping control the pest population in that park!

We want to help!! If you are feeding cats, OR if there are cats living under or around your home, we would like to set traps close by and catch these kitties so we can fix them. (We will bring them back to you once they have recovered)

We know it’s a big expense to have to feed so many so we want to help you by fixing them FOR FREE so they don’t make more mouths to feed.

If you will reach out to us privately, we are very happy to help you! Just message this page or call our community cats hot line 270-715-0937

What is TNR?

Trap–Neuter–Return or "TNR," is the most humane and effective method known for managing feral and stray cats and reducing their numbers. The cats, who typically live together in a group called a colony, are trapped and brought to a veterinary or spay/neuter clinic. They're then spayed or neutered, vaccinated and ear tipped. After they've recovered from their surgeries, the cats are returned back to their original territory where a caretaker provides regular food and shelter.
Because the cats can no longer reproduce, the colony has the potential to decline in size over time. Spaying and neutering also greatly reduce nuisance behavior. Once the cats are fixed, fighting, yowling and other noise associated with mating stops almost entirely. The foul odor caused by unaltered males spraying to mark territory disappears and the cats, no longer driven to mate, roam much less and become less visible. The cats themselves are healthier and less likely to spread feline diseases. Meanwhile, rodent control is maintained by the cats' continued presence.

If you would like to volunteer but can’t do it every day, this is a great opportunity to help! Most of our feeders are older and home bound. They are not able to set the traps, tell if ears are already tipped or drive.

We need to build a trapping team to help the feeders around Bowling Green/Warren County trap the cats so we can better control the cat population and save lives.

If you are interested, please message us and we will set up a training.

You are also welcomed to come to our community cat meetings every 2nd Thursday at 6:15pm the location in The Davis/Mosby Center 1951 River Street. (Formally Old Louisville Rd)

Don’t be afraid to get creative, you know your cats better then anyone else.... think... what will make them go in?

Have you tried a laser pointer, cat treats or even cat nip?

Don’t give up, make it your goal to fix them ALL!

Don’t forget we are here to help problem solve! Just ask!

Super cute video.... (volume up)
but let’s take something away from this.
This video is a perfect example of natures vacuum effect!

When there are resources, animals will move in to take advantage for survival.

The resources they are looking for are:
1) food
2) water
3) shelter

In this case the animal moved under the shed to be close to the food resource. Soon another ground hog moved in too.

Where humans are living in highly populated areas there are resources and that means there will be cats.

I would rather have a cat then mice or rats!
If you don’t have cats in highly populated areas you will have mice and rats!

Spay/Neuter helps control the cat population. TNR for feral cats is the solution to the over population problem.

After all....this is their land too!

No matter where you decide to feed the stray cats you see in your neighborhood, it’s important that you put the food in a bowl.

🐈 Training cats to come eat in the late afternoon or early evening is best in case you ever need to trap. Since feral cats can’t be touched we have to sedate them to help them. Sedation medicine causes vomiting if the cat has food or water on their stomach. Trapping in the late afternoon or early evening so they are confined to the trap all night allows you to control their food and water intake so that we can help the cat early the next morning.

🐜 a feeding schedule will keep the bugs away! When we leave out food it attracts bugs like ants and roaches. Always put food in a bowl and only feed what the cats can eat in that one feeding. Do not leave extra food out that will attract bugs.

🦝 🦨 raccoons and skunks are also drawn to cat food. It is super important that we do not interfere with wildlife especially skunks and raccoons because your neighbors will see them as a nuisance and call wildlife control to come and remove those animals. These types of animals do not do well when they are relocated because they don’t know where their food or shelter is which makes them easy prey for something to hurt them or for them to suffer starvation. Feed your cats on a schedule in the early evening or late afternoon. Take up any food they do not eat so you do not attract wildlife.

💵 you can save money by feeding on a schedule and only giving the amount of food they can eat at that one feeding . Leaving piles of food out all of the time will attract birds to eat your cat food and that means you have to buy a lot more food.
Feeders that have switched over to schedule feeding have said they have saved a lot of money and they like knowing the cats are getting enough to eat.

👃 Can cat food left out in the sun stinks!
Feeding in a bowl on a schedule will prevent stinky cat food sidewalks.

TNR needed in horse cave!!
We just got a message from someone staying at this hotel reporting feral cats that need to be fixed. The location is the holiday inn express off of i65 at horse cave.

Do we have anyone close that would be willing to trap? Warren Co is willing to fix and vet them for us.

They said that it would be easy to trap, if you open a can of food they come running to eat so it sounds like a lot of people are feeding them and they are trained to come to that sounds.

They are living under their dumpster. Please let us know if you can go by and trap these kitties and bring to Bowling Green for spay/neuter.

Are you worried a cat might be cold?
We have winter houses at the shelter.
It costs $25 to make a cat house.

If you need one you and wanted to donate $25 so we can replace it that would be awesome!

01/27/2020

Tonight we saw a cat repellent.
If cats are doing something they is not ok to do, CAT STOP brand repellers work great to ask them to “do their business” somewhere else.

01/27/2020

IF YOU ARE FEEDING CATS ON PATRICK WAY.... We need you to call our Community Cat hotline at 270-715-0397
We want to help you TNR in that area.

2 weeks of trap training leads to the exciting TRAP NIGHT!

We caught 2 but both ears were tipped so they were immediately released.

It appears someone is trapping in the Fairview cemetery area. Please contact this page or Tracy Moser at the shelter if you are So we can compare notes on the kittens

01/27/2020

Trap training around Fairview cemetery.

Notice the trap is wired open.
For 2 weeks the feeder will put food in the trap to teach the cats it is safe to go in. Nothing will happen.

You start by putting the food close to the opening so the cat can grab and pull back learning that the trap won’t close on them.

Each evening, push the food back a little more to encourage them to go all the way inside.

Obese the cats are going inside, call the clinic to make sure they have space open. The. cut the pipe cleaner or string and set the trap.

01/27/2020

This video shows releasing a cat after he was fixed and ear tipped. The box in the picture is called a den.

It allows the caregivers at the shelter to safety clean and feed because the cat will go inside to hide, the caregiver can close the hole and clean without getting hurt and the cat feels safe because it is hidden.

PLUS it’s a handy crate to release the cat one it has recovered!

01/27/2020

IF TNR was easy.... everyone would be doing it. It takes a creative thinker to over come some of the hurtles TNR presents.
