We begin very basic crate training and house training. The puppies learn to do all their potty business outside, and they are introduced to short periods of time in a crate. This gives them a good foundation for house training and crate training when they go to their new homes. They certainly are not fully trained by eight weeks old, but they have a great foundation.
By six weeks old, the puppies have been dewormed twice, and they will be dewormed one more time before 8 weeks old. Regular deworming is important for young puppies, because they are very susceptible to parasites. I use pyrantel when they are under six weeks old and then switch to fenbendazole after six weeks old.
The puppies are six weeks old. They are very active and social, and they are getting to explore and experience many new things.
The puppies are 2.5 weeks old, and they are all doing well. When I recorded today’s weight, I also gave them their first deworming. This is important for puppies to stay on top of any parasites. Young puppies are very susceptible to parasites and related infections, so I deworm them every 2-3 weeks up until 2 months old. I start with pyrantel in the early weeks, and switch to fenbendazole after 6 weeks old. #puppies #goldenirish #puppycare #familyraisedpuppies
Oakley, our 2.5 year old Golden Retriever is expecting her first litter of puppies in a few weeks! We’re so excited to see how she does as a momma! We expect to have available puppies from this litter, so if you’ve been wanting a Golden Irish puppy, now is your chance! #goldenirish #puppies #goldenretriever #irishsetter #familyraisedpuppies
There are quite a few things going on here. We are working on crate training/potty training. The puppies are being socialized with children. Also, we are doing sound desensitization. Many dogs are frightened loud noises. By introducing things like vacuum cleaners to young puppies in a safe, familiar environment, they learn not to be afraid. This was their first meeting with the vacuum. At first, they jumped at the sound. After a few moments, they resumed playing. After a few more interactions like this, they likely will exhibit no reaction at all.
Can you see a big difference from the last video? The puppies are definitely growing, and Mister Bailey wasn't interested in settling down for a nice picture.
I need some help naming Nova's winter litter! They will be heading to their new homes around St. Patrick's Day, so I'm thinking of some good Irish/St. Paddy's Day names. Leave your ideas in the comments! The puppies are 11 days old and deliciously squishy and fat. Starting at the left, there are three males arranged from darkest to lightest. At the right is the sole female puppy of the litter.
I don’t know if my bush will survive these puppies. 😂 #irishsetter #redsetter
Irish setter pups playing in the warm sun after a bath this evening. They were delighted to find an old tug toy in the grass. Funny thing about that toy is- I made it myself 5 years ago out of braided fleece. It has survived much love and abuse and even (mostly) survived an unfortunate trip through the mower blades. For some reason, I can buy all sorts of new, fun toys, but puppies ALWAYS love the ratty, old toys and smelly socks and shoes the most. #irishsetter #puppies
The Irish setter puppies enjoying some playtime in the yard. Some of these sweet ladies are still available!
