I stand behind this 💯!! This post is gold.

➡️To shoe or not to shoe… that is the question.

What a good question. So I will preface this with saying that I do believe probably a lot of horses could *run barrels* without shoes.

I start shoeing my horses once they really start hauling. They stand at the trailer on rocks, or if one has rocky terrain at home. I don’t want them wearing out there feet on asphalt or concrete. I don’t want them to get a stone bruise. Same as when they do have shoes, I try to bring them in when it’s super wet to prevent abscesses and jerking shoes in the mud.

When you have a lot of money out on entry fees, it’s just cheap insurance to make sure they keep their shoes on and to do my best to stay on top of their foot care.

I’m just going to say most topical stuff for feet… is actually not very good for feet. 🙈 Ask your shoer… not fb.

I know I’ve talked about it some, but getting some feet radiographs here and there can save you a lot of money long term. They can look fine to the naked eye, and not be fine. Negative angles can cause a slew of issues from hocks, stifles, si’s, etc.

If you are having recurring maintenance, again, a cheap set of radiographs can be telling. This is one of the easiest and most common things I fix on my project horses. I always start at their feet.

Typically, feet are not the most thought of thing in breeding. I’ve seen a lot of winning horses with bad feet. Although some do care, more don’t.

Also, I’m not saying spend a million dollars, but cheaping out on a farrier will cost you a lot more down the road too. You will either pay your farrier or pay your vet… and I always say, my loyalty to my shoer ends where my vet bills begin.

➡️➡️➡️You cannot go 7-8 weeks on a horse you’re competing on regularly! Ugh, think of the tendon changes. 🤯⬅️⬅️⬅️

My horses are typically on a 4/5 week rotation.

As a general rule, your horses should NOT be sore after your shoer leaves.

As far as bad angles go, a lot of times we can inject their feet, fix the shoeing and may never have to inject their feet again. This scares a lot of people…. This is where I swoop in for the hot deal. 🔥

Recently people have asked if I ever run rims on the hind end… EXTREMELY RARE. I know some people do, but when they grab, it can get you in some trouble. I generally run a “regular” shoe or an aluminum shoe on the hind. If I have a problem, we might try a few things, but 90% of my horses are fine set up like that.

Make sure your vet and shoer can work together on a problem. I see a lot of them that won’t. That will only hurt you and your horse.

Shoes to fix problems and shoes to compete in are often not the same. It’s important everyone knows what’s what so that you can be on the right track.

Y’all have touched my heart. It’s no easy task setting up shop as an equine vet in such an established equine community. I feel like two years later though, we’ve found OUR PEOPLE! These cards are everything.

I can’t wait for the coming year and thank y’all for allowing our team to be a part of your team.

Peace and love be with you this Christmas. 🎄

Veterans, thank you for bravely doing what you’re called to do so we can safely do what we’re free to do. We salute you! 🇺🇸

I come from a very long, dedicated line of civil servants. I am grateful, proud, and humbled by the sacrifice each and every one of my family members has given. We salute you all! Thank you for your service.

Grandpa Montelius- US Navy gunner on the USS Effingham

My Dad- US Army 2nd of the 75th Ranger Battalion of Fort Lewis

My Father-in-law, Dan Leonardo- US Army

Cousin Emily- Administration Air Force

Uncle Jim- 1st Air Cavalry 2nd of the 5th Battalion

Uncle Red- Pilot A-10

When we started, this horse was severely lame at the walk. A very large piece of his coffin bone was fractured off within the joint.

Dr. Doering removed it arthroscopically and our farriers have him shod to relieve stress in that region. He has completed rehab and is back to work with his family that loves him so much.

(X-rays are in the comments.)

Having THE MOST WONDERFUL time as the vet for the Red Steagall Ranch Rodeo at the legendary Fort Worth Stockyards!

(You can see Red in the second seat of the wagon but I was trying not to be a fan girl so I opted for a picture with the horses!)

We spent the weekend in Louisville, KY and boy did we have fun (sipping bourbon). It was great catching up with so many friends and mentors at the surgery conference.

Even more exciting though, we made it out of there with an equine anesthesia machine and everything necessary to repair fractures!

The clinic is one step closer to being finished. 🏇🏽🥃

We’re so excited the front office is complete. Y’all stop by for a cup of coffee and visit! Donnie is giving $0.50 tours. He’ll walk ya around and tell you a story or two (complementary.) 😉

The last few pictures are where we started from after demolishing several disgusting stalls. We could always see the potential. It just took some serious love and spit polish to get here.

Here ya go fellas!

I’m not throwing shade. It just makes me proud to be a female surgeon- especially in such a male dominated field.

It is with a full heart that I say, we have been BUSY around here! The front office is almost finished and the OR’s are getting so darn close. I can’t even contain my excitement. We have worked legitimately day and night to get to this point.

That being said, I’m starting to get a little behind on my personal phone so to better serve you, please make sure to contact us on the clinic number. I’m worried I’m not getting back to each and every one of you in a timely manner on my personal number.

Again, I want to thank you all so much for your continued support and entrusting me with the care of your horses.

If you’re from around here, y’all know how much we all love a “second date update!” Haha

So here’s an update from one of the most satisfying colics we’ve cut!

This horse swallowed the netting on a round bale. It formed a very hard concretion-like stone around it which lodged in a smaller portion of the colon.

Pictured below is the GLOW UP after colic surgery. He’s now released back to full work as a BADDIE heel horse looking thicker than a Snickers.

We’re pretty proud of this kid!

Pecos won the Best of the Best, is a Corpus Christi WCRA finalist, NHSRA Texas National Qualifier, American Rodeo Qualifier, and has recently been 1st in the UPRA & CPRA standings.

It’s a pleasure supporting this young man and his equine partners!

08/07/2023

I’m grateful for my husband who helps me every day- hauling and making sure my horses are comfortable and bred/flushed, my girls that exercise our horses 5 days a week, my two trainers that keep them sharp/give me lessons, and the jockeys that take them in between runs to season on them.

In my world, it takes a village for every single run. I’m so incredibly grateful though! I can’t imagine not running barrels- I just have to do it a little differently these days.

It takes a team to win.
One of the most important parts of the team are the vets.

We can’t stress this enough-USE THE VET.

When the horse doesn’t feel right.
When the horse isn’t working as good as it was working.
If there are problems on the pattern that are new-have them checked.

If they all of a sudden aren’t firing or are letting up half way thru the run.
If they start being aggressive while saddling trying to bite or kick you.

The game has changed and it is way too tough to run a sore horse and think you can be competitive.

Even if one is winning and doing great, we vet them before major events or every 8 weeks. Stay ahead of issues. It's easier to correct when it is just an injection and not a major injury that was caused because we were not paying attention.
