Saturday Skills!
Wally didn't want to let his bone go and decided to save it for later in a very unfortunate location. Wally came in and had to be slightly sedated for removal, but was such a good boy during the whole process! The next morning, he was back to his normal, happy self! We <3 you Wally! Toxin Tuesday! This one’s for the kitties!
Did you know cats are the most common pets in the U.S.? While they tend to be picky eaters, cats can still get into trouble with toxic substances. The top five toxins for cats are human/veterinary drugs, poisonous plants, insecticides, household cleaners, and glow sticks/liquid potpourri.
1. Human and Veterinary Drugs
Around 40% of feline poisoning cases involve medications. Cats have a unique metabolism that makes certain drugs extremely toxic. For example, human NSAIDs can cause kidney failure and ulcers, and a single acetaminophen tablet can be fatal. Some antidepressants also attract cats because of their coatings, posing additional risk.
2. Poisonous Plants
Poisonous plants make up about 14% of feline poisoning cases. True lilies, including Tiger, Day, Easter, and Oriental lilies, are highly dangerous—even tiny amounts of petals, pollen, or vase water can cause sudden kidney failure. Florists often include these lilies in bouquets, so be vigilant. Other plants like Peace and Calla lilies aren’t as deadly but can irritate the mouth and throat. Visit www.noliliesforkitties.com for photos of harmful plants and safer alternatives.
3. Insecticides
About 9% of feline poisoning cases involve insecticides. Cats can be exposed by walking on treated areas or through sprays and powders. Accidental application of canine flea treatments containing pyrethrins or pyrethroids is especially dangerous and can lead to severe symptoms or death. Always check labels and consult your vet for cat-safe options.
4. Household Cleaners
Household cleaners cause 6% of feline poisoning calls. Products like surface and carpet cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, and detergents can be toxic. Keep cats away from freshly cleaned areas until surfaces are completely dry, and store products securely.
5. Glow Sticks and Liquid Potpourri
Glow sticks contain a bitter liquid that causes drooling if bitten, while liquid potpourri can cause severe chemical burn
