"We are truly grateful to have adopted this senior cat. At 13 years old, she behaves like a playful 6-year-old. Kitty loves being cradled like a baby, lounging in the windowsill, and chasing her laser pointer. My family has always chosen adoption, and I believe there’s no better place to do it than HOV. She no longer has bald spots and has a great appetite. We are so beyond happy that HOV saved her and gave her a second chance at life. She is the best thing that has happened to me." -Norah

Life Saving Partnerships
Heart of the Valley is blessed to operate our shelter in such an incredibly pet friendly and loving community. As a result, dogs and cats don’t stay in the shelter for long before they go home; in 2024, the average length of stay for pets in the shelter was only 11 days! Thanks to our resources and high adoption rates, we have the opportunity to partner with other shelters and rescues to save pets.

We regularly communicate and collaborate with other organizations as part of a network of Montana animal welfare organizations. Through those efforts, we routinely get requests from organizations to transfer dogs and cats to HOV. The reasons vary: the shelter may be at their maximum capacity to care for pets or may not be equipped to meet special medical or behavior concerns. Recently a shelter reached out because they were in the process of renovating their facility and could not house pets during construction. Sometimes a pet has been at the shelter for some time and a change in potential adopters can help them find a new home. Foster based organizations may have limited space and capacity to rehome pets, especially if they operate in high-risk areas where the future for dogs and cats is uncertain. Whatever the situation, HOV is happy to help!

Mrs. Claws is a lovely nine-year-old kitty who was transferred from another shelter. She had significant medical concerns including an eye condition called entropion which requires surgery to correct. She was also in desperate need of dental surgery to correct multiple issues including fractured teeth. After a full medical assessment and treatment plan, our vet clinic was able to do surgery to correct the issue with both eyes and dental issues. After a few days of recovery, she was available for adoption and quickly went to her new home for a much deserved second chance!

Our transfer program primarily focuses on homeless pets that are already in Montana, but we do occasionally help organizations from other states. For example, we recently took in and found homes for dogs affected by the devastating fires in California. Beltora was a beautiful one-year-old pup who was part of a rescue flight to Montana. After getting a medical and behavioral assessment and being spayed, she was in her new home in just over a week!

"From the time I opened the cage to pet Otis, which staff gave me a warning of him being feisty and be careful, I knew he was the one. He leapt onto me and just hugged me, his arms around my neck. Not only does Otis love to snuggle next to my head every night but he loves his treats and his kid brother! Thank you so much HOV for our furbaby! ❤" -Jacye

Olaf is this week's Staff Favorite! Rosie has chosen this chill, sophisticated, and distinguished 13.5-year-old who loves to play it cool. This dapper feline is an expert in cozy naps and silent judgment, is an office assistant extraordinaire, and will love you more than he loves lounging (but not as much as he loves food).
