Here in sunny Florida, we're no strangers to hot weather. Many of us are aware of the dangers heat and humidity pose to our pets, but do you know how to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses? Do you know what to do if you suspect your dog is suffering from heat stress, exhaustion, or stroke?

There are three levels of heat-related illness in dogs, with heat stroke being the most severe. If you suspect your dog is beginning to overheat, follow these steps:

-Remove your dog from the hot environment. Even just a shady spot is better.
-Lower your dog's body temperature gradually by wetting them down with a hose or bucket. Do NOT use an ice bath as this could cool them too rapidly.
-Don't wrap your dog in wet towels as this could trap the heat even further
-Offer small amounts of cool water
-A fan or your car's AC blowing over your wet dog can help aid in cooling
-Seek veterinary attention immediately

To help lower the chance of heat stroke in your dog, avoid strenuous activity during the day. Quick potty breaks are okay, but save their walks for early morning and evening. Be sure to always have water available, and NEVER leave your dog in the car even just for a few minutes.

Stay safe and give your pups a pat from me!
