Fast play increases arousal chemicals in the brain and body, and adrenaline is produced.
Once play is stopped, though, a dog still experiences elevated arousal levels and can react to stimuli. Blood sugar decreases in the prefrontal cortex and bad choices can happen.
Many dogs need to decompress after play. Otherwise, “trigger stacking” can occur, a layering of stressful events in a short time causing extreme reactions.
Monitor play and impose breaks that last a few seconds to keep it in check.
If your dog is a fast, hard player, try substituting social walks with friends, scenting games, and sniffaris. Or, limit the time of a play date and follow it with one of these.
