Meet our beautiful black and tan Cane Corso, Bruce! Bruce has caused QUITE a stir on Facebook today, y'all.
A handful of people (I'm going to assume breeders or one breeder and their friends) began commenting on our post today about his coat color. Of course that is totally fine, but most of comments weren't curious, clarifying, or respectful. They were rude and accusatory, clearly without all of the information. So here it is-
As anyone who follows our page and/or has messaged us about Bruce will know, black and tan is a nonstandard color for the Cane Corso. Can it happen? Yes. However, as responsible breeders we have informed everyone who reached out about Bruce (and who wouldn't want him? He's gorgeous!) that he comes with a limited AKC registration and should not be bred because of the coat color. The coat color is the only disqualification about him. His form, health, and temperament are all excellent. He won't be competing in conformation or fathering any litters, but that's true of a majority of corsos out there, isn't it?
Yes, AKC *does* allow registration of nonstandard colors. We contacted them to be certain so that we could convey instructions to his new family when the time comes. We were accused of lying about the AKC registration...although how would we get away with lying about that when we give registration papers to the new owners at pick up and the pedigrees are posted on our page? It's okay, not everyone is good at research.
And because it was clear there would be questions about him (although we definitely didn't expect to be bombarded with harassing comments from allegedly ethical breeders), we went ahead and submitted a DNA and health swab for him a few weeks ago. Results are still pending. We have also considered keeping him (and still might), so we figured we could go ahead and get that information now.
These commenters did not really have anything else to say when provided with the information we have always provided to anyone interested in Bruce, and it is unclear what exactly did they want us to DO about having a nonstandard color puppy? Hide him? Euthanize him? We have done all of the responsible steps, we assure you all.
Attached you will find pictures of Bruce, our litter registration, his pending Embark results, and the communication from the AKC about how to register nonstandard colors.
Remember everyone, it costs exactly $0 to be kind, classy, and mind your own business. Hope everyone has the day they deserve!
