This weeks breed highlight is the Irish Setter! 🐾
Irish Setters were originally bred as bird dogs as they have a strong hunting instinct and keen sense of smell. Modern day, they do extremely well as AKC Rally and Agility dogs. They often have a slender build and are very high energy.
Often times people think this breed is “derpy” since they are slow to mature, but don’t let the puppy energy fool you, these dogs are highly intelligent and catch on quick to routines. If you excuse their behaviors due to them being a puppy, you will often run into issues as they grow into their full size as they are stubborn.
If training is introduced early and taps into their athleticism, these dogs are great companions. Presidents FDR, Nixon, and Reagan all owned Irish Setters!
Overall, they are super fun dogs and are eager to please! Owners should expect to spend a lot of time exercising them mentally and physically!
