Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called "Theobromine".

It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Just a word of caution — check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.

Theobromine is the ingredient that is used to make all chocolate — especially dark or baker's chocolate — which is toxic to dogs.

Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

Crate training is very important. Vets and groomers use cages, and if there is ever an emergency a crate is the safest place for them. Always keep your pups acclimated and comfortable with crates. Our younger dogs are only in crates when we are gone, this protects them and our stuff. Stella and Everest are free roam but they are used to crates. They were crated until they were 3 or 4 when we could trust them not to get in to stuff and chew or swallow something that could harm them. A crate should always be a safe place, not somewhere you put them when they are naughty.

Boston getting ready for his hot date. Bernese Mountain Dogs can be heavy shedders but with brushing a couple times a week with a rake you can help loosen and remove the coat. A professional groomer with a high velocity dryer can remove the undercoat so much more efficiently than brushing and raking. I also use deshedding shampoo and conditioner to help loosen the coat even more. He is so fluffy and handsome!

I will never understand why they end up here. I don’t care what happens, my dogs will never leave me. Please spread the word, poor Max has been there over 6 months, these sweet faces break my heart! Make sure if you get a pup for the holidays you are in it for the long haul, the puppy phase is hard but does it ever pay off!

Betah got her rabies shot today at the vet!(we never do shots together, we space them all out). Her check up was great, she never cried and she used her manners when she met everyone! She is now potty trained and 5 months and one week old and 47.5 lbs. I don’t think she will fit on Gavin’s lap in the front seat much longer. Besties forever! Cleaning snow off of each other! These two are 4 months apart and the best friends! Over the last 20 years we have always had a berner and golden pair of girls as besties! Sadly this is our third pair, as sadly they don’t live forever but we get the best long years with them. Nala is on the hunt, she’s stalking Betah in the beginning, you can’t see her but you can see Betah. It’s crazy we never had an accumulation of snow until last week when we got over a foot in 2 days! The dogs don’t stay out long, their paw pads are shaved every 4 weeks so their feet can’t handle these negative temps, I can’t believe how cold it is right now!
