Brutus Eugene went to Eugene’s Pet Wash in Odessa for a much needed bath!! He wasn’t too sure about the blow dryer and vacuum but he did okay with this new experience. He’s always done really well with baths but I will say like always, I pretty much had a shower too while bathing him. He got a nice REAL bone after bath time and a new alligator chew toy for being such a good boy.

Why Brutus? Why?!?! I was only gone 10-15 minutes getting Drew from work, why would you do this to the travel trailer door?!?! You’ve been a road dog, all of your life and this isn’t the first time you’ve stayed by yourself at the travel trailer, so why do this today?!?! Brutus scared me unnecessarily at about 2 this morning. I don’t know what woke me up, but something made me check on Brutus. He was cold to the touch and didn’t feel like he was breathing. I called his name loudly several times, lifted his feet and legs and they just fell back onto the bed. I put my hand on his chest and could faintly feel him breathing in and out and his heartbeat. I started shaking him and calling his name and FINALLY he raised his head and opened his eyes and looked at me like, why did you wake me up, can’t you see that I am sleeping? Then he stretched really big, stood up and turned around and flopped back down on the bed. I swear this dog is going to be the reason I have a heart attack.

I’ve been in West Texas for the past week and Kylee and Madi were taking care of things back home. The other evening while they were tending to the cows, chickens and rabbits; they had Brutus out with them so that he could burn off some of his energy. This is something that I also do. Since it had been raining, he got muddy from all of the romping and playing. They hosed him off before coming inside but then they noticed bloody paw prints all through the house, even though he wasn’t really limping. Bru wouldn’t let them look at it to see how bad it was, so Kylee made the decision to take him with her to work (she’s a vet tech). It took two of them holding him and he being muzzled for Dr. Lucy to cauterize the wound, since it was on the callus part of his pad, she couldn’t stitch it. Sent him home on antibiotics, which of course he refused to take, because I wasn’t the one giving them to him. I’m home now and my boy will take his meds and be able to p**p. He usually doesn’t have bowel movements when I’m gone, and that’s why I don’t stay gone for very long.

Back when Brutus was a little turd that didn’t like going on walks. Thank goodness he figured it out and is a gentleman when walking (well most of the time). If you haven’t gotten your pups leash trained, what are you waiting on? I highly recommend a Gentle Leader head collar. When used properly, walks with your dog are more enjoyable for both you and your dog. That’s all we use with our Danes!!

I’ve been watching a ton of classic cartoons and I have noticed that Great Danes are featured as the pets in a few of these toons. From the Jetsons, we have Astro. From the Blue Falcon, we have Dynomutt the Wonder Dog. We also get Marmaduke from the Sunday morning comic strips. And of course everyone knows and loves Scooby Doo, probably the most famous of the cartoon Great Danes. But did you ever stop to think that maybe Dino from the Flintsones, is the prehistoric version of a Great Dane? He greets Fred as soon as he gets home by knocking Fred over. He’s super clingy to all of the family and hates to be left behind. He doesn’t know how big he is and regularly jumps in Fred’s lap/arms. He’s a rather large Snorkasaurus, almost the same size as his human, Fred. Despite his size, he’s a big old scaredy when it’s raining or if the family is faced with a minor crisis but will show true bravery when needed. He shows his feelings in the humanish way, much like Danes do and gets sad, happy, mad and cries real tears, something I have seen Brutus do on 3 different occasions. For these reasons, I think Dino is a prehistoric Great Dane. What do you guys think?

4 years ago today, Big Brute joined our family. Our lives have changed so much in that time period and much of it Bru has been a part of. We love our Big Boy like no other dog before him and like no other dog after him. He’s a one of a kind pet. We love you Brutus Eugene!! Happy Gotcha Day!!

Uncle Brutus and Stetson are going to be best buds one day very soon!! They already nap together and have similar tastes in toys as well as teething chews; Brutus thinks that if it’s Stetson’s, then it should also be his. 🥰

A little backstory: when Brutus was a puppy, he had an emotional support blanket, that he took everywhere with him. He chewed it, suckled it and snuggled it, until it eventually was in tatters and had to be thrown away. Fast forward to last night, I was doing our income tax return and was becoming frustrated because I was having trouble getting the paper copy of our W-2’s uploaded to the tax preparation website. That frustration started leaking out of me in the form of tears, sobs and even some laughter because my family was astounded that I was crying over tax preparation and technical difficulties and they were trying to calm me down. Brutus in his infinite wisdom and need to take care of me, started chuffing and then brought this blanket (which was a gift to someone in our household at some point and we just rediscovered it while cleaning this weekend) and quite literally chunked it at me while I cried. Talk about an immediate mood lightening, who can continue to cry, when their best boy does something so heartfelt to make their person happy?! I wish we had gotten a recording of it because it was precious and priceless 🖤🤍
