Harrison's Bird Foods Celebrates a Semester of Impactful Engagement with Veterinary Students Through Feathers of the Future Program
Brentwood, TN, December 2024 — This fall semester, Harrison's Bird Foods continued its commitment to advancing avian care and nutrition education through its Feathers of the Future program. By collaborating with veterinary student ambassadors and academic institutions, the program inspired and educated future veterinary professionals, reaching thousands of students across the United States and beyond.
Semester Highlights:
1. Virtual Training Day: The student ambassadors launched the semester by learning about Harrison's products, avian nutrition, and expectations for the year.
2. Exotic DVM Forum: Nearly 200 students from 48 veterinary schools joined this forum, fostering a collaborative learning environment for exotic animal care.
3. Student Engagement: Through welcome emails and monthly "Bulletin Bird" updates, Harrison's ambassadors connected with approximately 2,500 students. Social media posts further amplified awareness, with ambassadors sharing their outreach successes through detailed reports.
4. Lunch Lectures: Students at Purdue, UC Davis, Virginia-Maryland, Michigan State, Kansas State, and the University of Illinois participated in interactive sessions on avian nutrition, with meals sponsored by Harrison's Bird Foods.
5. Special Events:
o At Virginia-Maryland, the Zoo, Exotic Pet, and Wildlife Medicine Club partnered with Harrison's to host Dr. Karin Lourens, who presented on wild avian rehabilitation, emphasizing proper nutrition for released birds.
o NC State organized the Parrot Cognition and Behavior Symposium, featuring renowned speakers Dr. Irene Pepperberg and Dr. Jan Hooimeijer, who discussed parrot welfare, cognitive abilities, and behavior management.
o Sponsored Purdue’s wet labs at their annual Medicine of Mammalian and Avian Species (MMAS) Symposium.
6. Global Impact: Feathers of the Future expanded its reach through a webinar accessible to veterinary students worldwide, highlighting Harrison’s dedication to avian health education.
