Please join us in welcoming Lady to the farm! She's a good traveler, and we're hopeful she'll settle in smoothly. It's important to us that we allow horses time to get their bearings in a new place before moving them into a pasture with friends. Here, Lady is saying hello to Darragh and Sassy through the fence.

Since I was reading tests for a couple hours this morning, I didn't get to take many photos, but here are a couple snaps of the gals in the warm up!

I'm so proud of our riders. It was a new venue to all 5 horses, and our riders also challenged themselves in a variety of ways. Everyone had moments where they needed to build their horse's confidence, and were successful.

Despite the rain the night before and soggy arena, our team had big smiles and lots of growing moments.

I'd also like to add that our ladies have an amazing work ethic, and I was so proud of everyone for their commitment to the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.

As schools are wrapping up their year, and parents eager to get their kids involved in summer activities, we've had some inquiries about lessons. We do have some availability for summer riding lessons!

We also want you to shop around, and to be an informed consumer when you're considering a barn. We're not the right fit for everyone, and want to make sure you know the questions that are important to ask of a potential farm so that you can make the best decision for your family.

Ask: What are your qualifications?
In the US, there are no regulations on teachers for horseback riding - anyone can open a business as an instructor. As a parent, how do you know if a person is qualified or not? Ask about their credentials, certifications, and how long they've been instructing. While being a horse-owner may make a person knowledgeable about their horse, it may not give them the background and education necessary to explain more complex principles or to keep a young rider safe. A good instructor should be a good learner too - their should be a hunger to advance their own education through lessons and clinics.

Ask: Do you carry insurance?
Also surprising to many, and scary, is that there isn't a requirement when opening a business to provide proof of insurance. Specific insurance to ask about is Commercial General Liability insurance for the farm business if lessons are provided by the farm owner. If a lesson is taught by an independent instructor who doesn't own the farm, ask about Professional Liability insurance. A farm or home owner's policy doesn't cover the instructor's business activity.

Ask: What type of instruction do you specialize in, and what's your area of expertise?
If your goal is to be a barrel racer, taking hunt seat lessons may not get you to your goals as quickly as someone who's goals are aligned with yours. While good fundamentals are important no matter what the discipline, it's a good idea to find a person that does the type of riding you want to end up doing in the big picture.

Ask: Are lessons private, or a group setting?
If you've never ridden a horse before, a group setting may not be the best to set you up for success and keep you safe. Conversely, if you have some riding experience, a group setting where you can learn to navigate your horse in 'traffic', how to safely pass, arena etiquette, etc may be the best way to advance your skills.

Ask: Do you provide equipment for my child, or do we need to bring our own?
Some barns provide a riding helmet to borrow for those riders new to horses, while other barns require you to bring your own right from the beginning. A bike helmet isn't the same as a riding helmet. A good instructor should be able to help your young rider with correct fit and placement of the helmet.

As you're looking for a fun place for your child to get involved this summer, we hope this provides a good starting off point to help you find just the right spot!

We're very fortunate to have been able to get a couple of our horses off property today as a bit if a trial run before heading to off-site shows for the season. It's so important to give horses a good experience when traveling, to build their confidence and allow them to feel safe in new environments. Thank you June for letting us come and visit today! FYI students and boarders - Curtis Rd at Dixie looks like it'll be closed.

If you're coming from south of us on Dixie, turn left / west onto Townline, and then right / north onto Moorish, which will end at Curtis right near the farm.

If you're coming from the north on Dixie, as you're approaching Green Acres golf course, take a right / west onto Riverview, then a left / south onto Rook Rd. This will get you to Curtis, where you'll make a left to head east towards the farm.

I came across this while browsing Facebook, and it reminded me of a conversation we had Saturday evening. A good friend and very wise woman made such an astute observation, "when I'm at the barn, I get to be all of the pieces of myself that in life and career I'm criticized for being. Assertive, confident, owning my space, being a leader - it's freeing to be able to access all these parts of me."

With the addition of some lovely lesson horses to the program, we have the availability to take on new students! If you're considering riding lessons for yourself or your child, we'd love to help you reach your goals!

Our lessons are based on building good fundamentals in both dressage and hunt seat, the instructors have attended certification clinics specific to their areas of expertise, and the farm carries the appropriate insurance for operating a lesson business. Lesson students may also be eligible to participate in our summer schooling horse show series.
