The temps and wind chill this week have meant that the horses are spending the majority of their time in the barn. This morning, we turned them out for an hour to stretch their legs while we cleaned the barn, and the sunrise was beautiful!
Big thank you to the friends, boarders, and students who have come to the farm to help this week - more hands pitching in made the work fly by! Thank you! ❤️

We're ready to share some very exciting news that's been in the works! World-renowned horsewoman Lynn Palm is coming to Oak Lane, her only Michigan dates in 2025. There will be a show, as well as clinic options available. We can't wait! Be sure to save the date!

Meet the Horses!

As our oldest school horse at nearly 31, Scotty is the perfect teacher for young riders to learn about grooming, tacking, and beginning to ride at the walk. Despite his age, you can still find Scotty cantering and bucking in the field on a cool day, or while waiting for his dinner to arrive - while he's very patient with the young ones, but not so patient waiting for a meal!

Meet the Horses!

Oh Harry, what a sweetheart! Harry joined us in very rough shape in the summer of 2023, with several medical issues he needed help resolving and some anxiety that he needed help working through. It's been a slow road for Harry, but we're so happy so see him thriving. Now that he's feeling healthier and more secure, his personality has really come out. He's playful and kind, loves to have his neck scratched near his poll, will always pick his head up from grazing when you call his name, and is all around a wonderful horse to have at the farm.

Meet the Herd!

This sweet, kind soul is Poppy, who is kindly shared with our lesson program by her amazing owner, Anne. Poppy is the type of horse who helps young riders learn the feel of the trot and canter, and will reward them with beautiful, smooth gaits when asked. She's kind enough to take a joke when a rider doesn't quite get it right, will test and challenge you in a safe way, and when you get it correct she'll offer lovely work through second level dressage. Her favorite activities are snacking, eating, and munching. We love Poppy!

Meet the Horses!

This absolute hunk is Forrest, and we can't say enough about him. Forrest joined Megan while in NY, after he was ready to retire after a very successful racing career. Forrest was an orphan foal, his dam passed away and he needed special care. His breeder, Tom, bottle raised him and gave him the best chance possible, and Tom and family grew quite a bond with Forrest. When it was time for him to retire, Tom approached Megan about giving Forrest a forever home, and he joined her farm family in November 2015.

Over the years, Forrest has become a lovely horse over fences and on the flat. We hope you enjoy some of the photos from his journey with us - from his most recent show, to his very first show (which was 6 rides post-track, and there was a lot of traffic in that indoor that he handled beautifully!), his first post-track ride, his first ride bridleless, etc. He's a very special guy, and we love him dearly!

Meet the Horses!

I'm pretty sure he assumes everyone should already know who he is - but in case you don't, this is Nic. In August 2012, Nic joined Megan's herd while she was living in NY. She saw his photo on a website for horses seeking a second career after their racing career was winding down, and she knew he had to come home with her. Since then, they've had lots of adventures, and he's pretty sure she bought this farm just for him.

Meet the Horses!

Bull is a loveable, quirky, goofy off-track thoroughbred that is a never-ending source of entertainment. With his playful personality, you can usually find Bull antagonizing his pasture mates, or submerged ears-deep in his water tank splashing around. He's currently working on stretching and lifting his topline, and loves to demonstrate some exuberant transitions. We love his zest for life!

Fall is a beautiful time to start riding! We have some limited openings for new students to our riding program. Classes are booked on a monthly basis, with riders participating the same time each week for an hour. Our students not only learn about riding, but also many aspects of horsemanship (grooming, equipment, ground work, stable management, first aid, etc) so that they're prepared to be lifelong equestrians. Meet the Horses!

Darragh joined us with Dylan in 2023 from a rescue, and is a Friesian X Thoroughbred mare. She's incredibly athletic and turns heads everywhere she goes. Darragh most enjoys riders with quiet aids, soft, following elbows and hands, and a calm demeanor. She can be sensitive, and looks to her rider for reassurance. We're very lucky to have this beautiful mare in our program, teaching our more advanced riders to level up their skills in the dressage ring.

Meet the Horses!

Say hello to Dylan! This little guy is such a character - we adore his silly personality and quirky demeanor. He's sensitive and forward, but safe and a smooth ride for a variety of riders. We adopted Dylan from a rescue in 2023, and are told he is a Lipizzan x Morgan. He has big, curious eyes, a beautiful coat, and a playful attitude. Most days you can find Dylan and Acorn goofing around in the pasture and seeing what trouble they can get into.

Oh Todd, there just aren't words to describe you! With big, expressive eyes, and a very clever mind, Todd is not afraid to voice his preferences and opinions. He's a sensitive, curious horse, with a giant personality. When he feels he's being slighted, he'll let you know by throwing you some side-eye... Not fast enough with the snacks? Side-eye. Ask him to be patient while tied? Side-eye. But really, who can blame him for knowing what he wants?

Meet the Horses!

This is Acorn, the youngest and shortest member of our bunch. What he lacks in height, he sure makes up for in personality - it's absolutely giant! Acorn came to us from a rescue, and we've been working on building his confidence and consistency under saddle. While note yet for beginners, we are hopeful that as he matures he'll grow into a steady citizen for our younger riders.
