Do not take food from your dog while it is eating. Just don't do it. There is a proper way to get your dog to disengage from an item, and forcibly taking away something previously given to them is not fair. Furthermore, establishing the principle that your dog cannot trust you to truly give it something erodes the power of rewarding from your hand. If you want you dog to disengage from food, use a "Leave It" command followed by a reward for the disengagement. If you want your dog to be normal around food, place a few pieces of food in the bowl and then repeatedly toss a piece or two into the bowl every time your dog looks up at you. This will build the relationship between looking at you and getting rewards.

Excellent point from one of my favorite Behaviorists. All behavioral problems begin rehabilitation with a structured walk. Once we have the dog looking at us and engaging with us, we can then begin to tell the dog "yes" and "no" which provided clarity and guidance to the dog. After we work on a solid walking skill, we can then use that to start counter-conditioning triggers to address reactivity issues. This is so powerful that my clients begin to see results in as little as one to two training sessions.

Last week we did a training session out in public for Mr. Tank who did an outstanding amd fantastic job. Tank went from being a puller with anxiety to being a much calmer companion who can now walk around with his owner in a public setting. Tank has made a ton of progress in his training and so has his owner.

Athena had a break through tonight on her "orbit" command. As part of her psychiatric service dog training, I want her to circle me and create space on command. Tonight she achieved 5/5 repetitions for the orbit command on voice alone. We started with a food lure to engage the nose, established a consistent hand signal, and properly placed the verbal command in the sequence of learning for an outstanding performance. Proud doggy-dad moment!

This was from the first day these two met each other. They did really well and are still improving on their walks together. They will now do a joint sit and a joint down. Baby steps of progress!
