Cycling a new tank! Every axolotl needs a cycled tank!

What is Cycling?

Cycling an aquarium is a cycle of creating beneficial bacteria to fight off ammonia and nitrate in a fish tank. Any type of fish living in water will create ammonia when they dispose of waste/poop. This is a really harmful chemical to them, especially axolotls as it can burn their delicate skin. Though you can get rid of ammonia by having a type of filtration system, which then turns the ammonia into Nitrite, then from there live plants will turn it into Nitrate which then is removed with water changes every two weeks. The process of cycling a tank can take 4-8 weeks usually, there are a ton of facebook groups that can help you cycle a tank and show you the full correct way to do it! This is only the start of learning about cycling. Make sure you do your own research as well! That is what has helped me the most. You begin to cycle a tank by setting up the tank how you'd want it, then adding your own form of ammonia, it is sold in bottled forms which is the best way to go about it, though you would also need an API liquid testing kit to be able to measure the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. It's definitely a lengthy progress, but once it is figured out you shouldn't have to mess with it again.

For filters, I use a giant sponge filter, which are usually around $5-20 on amazon, or a canister filter which will be better at keeping the tank clean and healthy, yet are usually so expensive. I like sponge filters as they collect beneficial bacteria really really well! I have been able to cycle sponges in less than a month just because of the size of them and how well they are able to cycle water.
