February is National Pet Dental Health Month! We will be offering a discount on dental procedures starting February 1st through March 31st for our small animal patients.

“Periodontal disease is the most common dental condition in dogs and cats – by the time your pet is 3 years old, he or she will very likely have some early evidence of periodontal disease, which will worsen as your pet grows older if effective preventive measures aren’t taken. Early detection and treatment are critical, because advanced periodontal disease can cause severe problems and pain for your pet. Periodontal disease doesn’t just affect your pet’s mouth. Other health problems found in association with periodontal disease include kidney, liver, and heart muscle changes.
It starts with plaque that hardens into tartar. Tartar above the gumline can often easily be seen and removed, but plaque and tartar below the gumline is damaging and sets the stage for infection and damage to the jawbone and the tissues that connect the tooth to the jaw bone. Periodontal disease is graded on a scale of 0 (normal) to 4 (severe).
The treatment of periodontal disease involves a thorough dental cleaning and x-rays may be needed to determine the severity of the disease. Your veterinarian or a board-certified veterinary dentist will make recommendations based on your pet’s overall health and the health of your pet’s teeth, and provide you with options to consider.” - AVMA

Our veterinary family is heartbroken over the loss of Dr. Ray Pawlisch. Dr. Ray was a doctor at Brodhead Veterinary Medical Center starting in 1982. Even though he’s been retired for several years, he always stopped in to check on us. Just last week he stopped in the clinic to visit with us and then he was on his way to take Carol to see the Snowy Owl. Dr. Ray was always a bright spot in our day! Please keep Dr. Ray’s wife, Carol, his sons, Ben (Andi) and Dean (Joanna), and all their grandkids in your thoughts. We are at a loss for words at this tremendous loss in our veterinary family.

Does your cat have the sniffles? What could be the cause and what to do.

Have you noticed your pet suffering from seasonal allergies?
*Sneezing
*Runny Nose
*Watery Eyes
*Coughing
*Sniffles

Allergies in animals are a common problem our clinic sees on a daily basis. As a clinic we strive to give the best possible care each patient needs and develop a treatment plan based on what owners are looking at accomplishing.

We offer a variety of diagnostics that can give us better information regarding specific issues a pet is presenting with. These are just a few that could help us determine if we are dealing with allergies or other infectious or viral diseases.

Diagnostics:
Office Exam - assessing your pet to determine the issue based on symptoms given by the owner.

FeLV/FIV testing - both of these diseases will compromise the immune system and can exemplify disease processes.

Bloodwork - used to rule out underlining infections

Radiographs - to look at sinuses and skull to determine if any abnormalities present.

Cultures - take a small sample of nasal discharge to determine if infectious.

Our treatment plans are dependent on physical exam findings along with any diagnostics we may run.

Treatments:
Over the counter antihistamines (Benadryl or Zyrtec) are used in general cases of allergies to relieve mild symptoms of watery eyes and sneezing.

Steroids are used in more severe cases where OTC medications are not enough.

Antibiotics are used if there is a secondary infection associated with allergies.
