Well, I've received a lot of questions today about "that new respiratory disease in dogs." So I thought it might be a good idea to share a resource for reliable information on the topic.

Dr. Scott Weese is a veterinary internal medicine specialist who works at Ontario Veterinary College’s Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses. He runs a fantastic blog called "Worms and Germs Blog" and has written a couple of posts about this "new disease." I've added the links below with the most recent post from today (November 27, 2023).

The long and short of it is this: it's okay to relax. We still do not have any evidence that there really is a new disease going around. It *might* be just a lot of hype around an outbreak of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC, sometimes called "Kennel Cough.")

Still, please read through Dr. Weese's article from today about precautions you can take if you feel concerned or like your dog might be in a "high risk" category.

As always, if you have any concern for your personal pet then the best thing to do is to call your veterinarian.

There’s been a lot of discussion about the state of infectious respiratory disease in dogs in the US. I’ve covered aspects such as what’s maybe going on,

I had so much fun helping with a pre-flight check on Santa's reindeer!
They're getting ready for their biggest endurance event of the year, so there will be LOTS of veterinarians helping Santa out leading up to their big event, during, and even there to support their recovery afterwards. They'll need all their health certificates in order to travel to so many different countries! (Just like your pets who travel need health certificates from their veterinarian.)

My kiddos had never seen reindeer up close before so I'd like to think their serious faces were listening carefully as I told Santa about the health status of his team. ;-) Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, V***n, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and even Rudolph are all in top performance shape!

Thank you to Kara Reese Photography for this amazing photo!

This USDA credentialed veterinarian has been certified an official “Santa’s E.L.V.E.S.” (Emergency Landing and Veterinary Expert System) member.

In the event that Santa’s reindeer team needs to make an unscheduled Christmas Eve stop for sled repairs, refueling, or veterinary care, I will be available to provide needed assistance and ensure a safe and on-time delivery of Santa’s cargo. 😁

Here’s a look at our holiday hours for Thanksgiving. If you are in need of a supplement or medication that is special ordered for your pet, please order well in advance to hopefully ensure delivery. There will be delivery delays on most Chinese Herbs and supplements due to the upcoming holiday season. Thank you!

With the ongoing poor air quality in the area, be on the lookout for any signs of respiratory problems in your pets. See the article below for symptoms to watch for.

Try to minimize outdoor activity. (Now is a great time for snuffle mats and food puzzles.) Keep windows and doors closed while running air filters and purifiers indoors. Be sure to change out your filters, too!

Smoke from the worst wildfire season in Canada's history has been triggering air quality alerts throughout the United States, threatening human and animal health.

Poor air quality can be as hard on animals as it is on humans. It's even harder for birds and brachycephalic (short-nosed) dog breeds.

Smoke from the worst wildfire season in Canada's history has been drifting southward since March.

Limiting a pet's time outdoors while the air quality remains poor is the best protection. Indoors, keep windows closed and use a fan or air conditioner to keep the inside air moving. If air filters are an option, use them.

Keep an eye on your pets during walks, runs, and outdoor play. If they seem to be breathing harder than normal, tiring out quicker, coughing, having discharge from their nose or eyes, then take a break indoors. Call your veterinarian right away if you think your pet is having difficulty breathing.

This week we are celebrating National Veterinary Receptionist Week! 💗 We are lucky to have 7 fantastic receptionists on our customer service team!

From the very first phone call to checking out after your appointment, Veterinary receptionists are crucial to the day to day running of IVS.

➡️ Receptionists play a pivotal role in our Fear Free standard of care. They make every effort to ensure an exam room is available for your pet upon arrival so you do not have to wait in the lobby area.

➡️ Receptionists help to start lab sample processing by taking in any dropped off specimens, and gathering the necessary information from the pet parent for the lab.

➡️ Receptionists are vital for fielding questions and urgent concerns from pet parents, and relaying those concerns to the technician and doctor teams in a timely manner.

➡️ Receptionists are incredible multi-taskers! From phone calls, emails, faxes, billing, prescriptions, and appointments, they are constantly working their hardest for our clients and our team!

We appreciate all that they do for IVS! Thank you Lisa, Julianna, Catherine, Amy, Reese, Marian, and Courtney!

Here is a good guide for identifying some toxic members of the lily family. This time of year we receive many calls about cats eating Easter Lilies and later on in summer time, Stargazer or Daylilies. Even just the pollen from these plants can be toxic to cats.

Exposure to certain lilies can cause kidney injury, vomiting, lethargy, anorexia, and more, depending on the type of Lily. Some of these symptoms can be life-threatening. Lily toxicity can affect both cats and dogs.
