ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORM
Do you have a pet??? Then you need to read this.
After an intense year battling Chagas Disease, caused by the notorious t-cruzi parasite from the Kissing bug (members of the Triatominae/traɪ.əˈtɒmɪniː/, a subfamily of the Reduviidae) our incredible dogs were finally cleared to breed as of September 24th, 2024! What a journey it has been! We lost two 14 week old puppies, our adult pack endured daily medications for a whole year, and their appetites were so low that we had to get creative at mealtime—real food and tasty treats became our go-to tricks to entice them to eat. But after twelve long months, a whole lot of money, and countless tests to ensure the treatment was effective, we received the most fantastic news: all tests came back negative! And, just to be sure, we tested again 30 days later, and once again, they were all negative!
We are beyond grateful to the amazing veterinarian, Dr. Roy Madigan, who developed the treatment for Chagas desease, and to our dedicated and wonderful veterinarian, Dr. Sherri Wooding, for her unwavering support through it all. Our beautiful labs; Marley, Midnight, Mila, Lyric and Echo have now become famous around the world in Dr. Madigan’s talks! Who would have thought that such a terrifying ordeal could turn into an inspiring journey where our sweet dog family could help countless other pets? We couldn’t be more thankful to those that prayed, showed their support and for God’s help through this battle.
To everyone living in the lower half of the US—it's time to get informed! Know what to ask your veterinarian, learn how to combat these pesky bugs, and understand what to do if you encounter them. Stay safe, stay healthy, and let’s protect our furry friends!
Kissing bug season typically runs from May through September, but I have seen the ugly creatures as early as February and as late as November in the Rio Grande Valley.
Congratulations to Echo on her first litter this side of the journey.
