We want you and your pets to have a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday. Here are a few tips to keep everyone happy and healthy:
1. Avoid Feeding Pets Human Food
While it can be tempting to share your Thanksgiving meal with your pet, many foods can cause serious health issues. We recommend:
No bones: Cooked bones, such as turkey bones, can splinter and cause choking or internal injuries.
Avoid high-fat foods: Rich, fatty foods can lead to pancreatitis, a painful and potentially life-threatening condition in pets.
Watch for garlic and onions: These are common ingredients in Thanksgiving dishes and can be toxic to pets, causing damage to red blood cells and leading to anemia.
2. Keep the Trash Secure
Holiday leftovers, especially bones, foil, and food scraps, should be kept in a secure trash can. Pets can often get into trash bags, potentially ingesting harmful food items or causing gastrointestinal issues. Some pets are also prone to βgarbage gutβ after eating spoiled food, which can lead to vomiting or diarrhea.
3. Monitor for Signs of Pancreatitis
If your pet ingests fatty or rich foods (like turkey skin or gravy), watch for signs of pancreatitis, which include:
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Abdominal pain (your pet may act uncomfortable or protective of their belly)
Loss of appetite
If any of these symptoms occur, it's essential to contact your vet immediately.
4. Be Cautious with Seasonal Plants
Some Thanksgiving plants, like poinsettias, mums, and autumn crocus, can be toxic to pets. If you're decorating with seasonal flowers or plants, keep them out of reach of curious pets.
5. Ensure Quiet Spaces for Pets
The hustle and bustle of family gatherings can be stressful for pets, especially if they are shy or nervous. Make sure your pets have a quiet, comfortable space where they can retreat to if they need some downtime away from the noise.
6. Update Pet Identification
With guests coming and going, thereβs always a risk that your pet could slip out the door unnoticed. Make sure your pet has proper identification, such as a collar with tags or a microchip, in case they get lost.
We hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!
