This is Billy.

He's not ours, but we're babysitting him and getting him ready to go live on a farm with lots of room to run and play.

No, he's not dying. He really is getting ready to move to a new state (with his existing owners) and will spend the rest of his days with acres and acres to enjoy.

But first, The Keck Homestead is helping to ensure he gets proper veterinary care and that he learns to respect a virtual/wireless boundary. This is much easier on our property because his owners currently live in a community with concrete walls around all of the properties.

Billy has been with us for just over a week now and he's doing great!

A short story about the difference between FRESH eggs and store-bought eggs... and the importance of understanding all instructions prior to cooking... 😅

I decided to learn how to poach eggs, tonight. At first, I just read the directions, which said to separate out the watery egg whites. My brilliant brain took that to mean separate the egg whites. As it was cooking I thought, "well, this isn't right." Went back and watched the instructional video and realized she meant any egg white that's much thinner than the rest.

Well... that part of the egg doesn't exist when you get the eggs from your backyard instead of the store. So that was why I was confused. 😂 This is now my new favorite way to cook my eggs.

It's only 80 degrees today, so I took the opportunity to do my seasonal cleaning of our little 10x10 barn. Fresh straw has been put down for the goats as well as in the nesting boxes.

And I'm expecting a broody hen to hatch eggs for the first time within the next week! Super egg-cited!

I've been caring for these babies for a while now and today they got to go to their forever home TOGETHER. Their new owner is experienced with caring for kittens this young and even lives close to me so I'll be able to offer support, if needed. It's a happy day ❤️

Keeping another baby warm and fed until another option becomes available or until she's old enough to be weaned and find her forever home ❤️ Also, I collected TWO duck eggs today after ZERO duck eggs for roughly 2 months. Anyway... I'm guessing the little ewok is about 2 weeks old, based on her size and strength.

No one told me how hard this lifestyle could be. I wasn't prepared for losing birds to the heat, to water, or to the unknown. I had no idea I would be fighting for a baby goat's life the first week I had her.

But I also didn't know the bliss of watching my hens pecking the ground or the excitement of chicks learning to fly out of their enclosure... It never crossed my mind how special it would make me feel for my animals to call out to me or for them to come running when I call them.

But the biggest surprise was everyone else being blown away by how excited and proud I feel when I collect pretty eggs 😂

My husband says, "you'd think YOU laid it, with the way you're carrying on!"

Our birds are happy, free-range, and fed balanced diets in addition to being able to forage. Their eggs have beautiful golden yolks which reflects these statements.

Duck eggs are larger than standard chicken eggs and they're much more nutrient-dense. I haven't sold them to anyone yet who said they didn't love them!

Supplies are limited. I can deliver within the Buckeye/Goodyear areas. Small delivery fee may be applicable.

PSA:

Do NOT remove kittens from an area unless you are 110% sure the mama isn't coming back for them. Stay far away from the kittens. You may not see Mom, but she sees you. She likely will not come back to her babies if you are hovering nearby.

Young kittens are so fluffy and cute we almost can't help ourselves, but do you know what it takes to take the place of their mama?

Do you know that Mama will get mastitis without their babies?

Kittens need to be syringe/bottle fed milk replacer that is specially formulated for their bodies. Cow's milk is NOT good for them. They need fed every 3-4 hours.

They need kept warm, as they cannot regulate their body temperature.

And until they're about 4 weeks old, they cannot p*e or p**p on their own. The MAMA stimulates them to make them urinate and have bowel movements until they can go on their own.

If you have pets, please find a clinic near you for affordable spay and neuter services.

If your pet had unwanted babies, reach out to your community to find a local rescue that can assist you, but do not dump these animals along the road somewhere.
