For whatever reason when I tried to edit my old post about this, Facebook just deleted it, and it isn't even in my trash to put back up. So I made an updated version.

Wild jumping spiders. Can they be kept as pets? Should they be kept as pets? Let's talk about it!

Many people's first thought when they see a wild jumping spider is to take it home, and make it their new pet. While this may seem like the most convenient way to get a pet jumping spider, it can turn out quite the opposite. Wild jumping spiders come with additional risks that captive raised jumping spiders do not.

Some wild jumping spiders do just fine being taken into captivity, but some of them suffer failure to thrive. Failure to thrive happens when they do not adapt to captive life and it is too stressful for them, this can cause a decline in their health. Signs of failure to thrive include not eating, not webbing or making a hammock, and sitting at the bottom of the enclosure being inactive. If you have taken in a wild caught jumping spider and it is displaying these signs for a week or longer, it probably is not adapting to captivity and should be released back to the wild.

Wild jumping spiders can be carrying parasites. These parasites usually kill them eventually, then will exit the deceased body. There really is no way to identify if a jumping spider has internal parasites or not, but it is something to be aware of as a possibility.

If you have found a wild jumping spider you're considering keeping, one of the first things you should identify is if it is a mature female or not. Mature female jumping spiders in the wild most of the time have already been mated and have babies on the way. They have hundreds of offspring which take a lot of time, effort, and money for supplies in order to care for them. If that isn't a responsibility you're prepared to take on, it is likely in the spiders and your best interest not to keep a mature female jumping spider from the wild.

Now that you know the risks associated with wild caught jumping spiders, keep them in mind when wondering if you can or should keep one from the wild. Also keep in mind that most wild jumping spiders are much more skittish than captive raised jumping spiders.

My phidippus regius Budgie, and phidippus otiosus Quinoa, have successfully paired! I am very hopeful for babies from them. Phidippus regius and phidippus otiosus are known to hybridize in the wild, they are the only two jumping spider species recorded to do this.

Meet the Parents: Marigold & Hulk. This one is long overdue! I paired these two ages ago and just hadn't properly introduced them yet. Unfortunately I had hulk for a very short period of time, and only have a couple photos of him. He is still one of the largest phidippus regius I've ever seen! Marigold is average size but I'm hoping her babies take some size after dad. Marigold is all orange and black with almost golden chelicerae! She has had multiple small clutches.
