My yearly reminder that just because it's winter doesn't mean MAINTAINING your dog's obedience stops. Get creative and take your training indoors. Today Kramer and I worked on heel, inside and outside turns, recall, place on novel items, and sit/stays. It wasn't perfect, but I held Kramer accountable and made sure he followed through on what I was asking of him.

I started organizing pack walks as a way to get my personal dog around other dogs on a regular basis. As time has gone on, it's grown into so much more. An opportunity for like minded people to get together and just be with their dogs and their community. My heart is full every time I walk up to the meeting spot and see people waiting for us. We've made so many new friends and connections this past year and I'm looking forward to continuing to grow this little passion project of mine in 2024. I hope you'll join us! 🐶🦴🐾

It's the week between Christmas and New Years. We don't know what day it is or what we're supposed to be doing. We do know we're gonna take advantage of the extra time at home by practicing elevated wall hides with Kramer. Wall hides are one of his weaknesses in nose work, so we kept the search area very small to ensure he'd have all wins. 🙌

The number one "complaint " I hear from most dog owners is that their dog is unmanageable when guests come to the door.🚪While there are a couple ways to manage this (leashing your dog, polite greetings, gating them in another room, etc), a solid place command is one of my favorite goals to work towards because you can do it from a distance.
Nugget and his owner have been working hard on his place command, slowly adding the 3 D's (distance, duration, and distraction) for the past few weeks. This was the first time practicing someone coming in the door and he nailed it! Setting up these scenarios and getting lots of practice in before the real thing happens is key. 🔑

A frozen kong paired with a solid place command allowed us to safely bring in and set up our Christmas tree today 🎄 without Kramer bolting out the door or being underfoot. 🐾

Kramer is sensitive to the sound of the Treat and Train unless it's right next to me. I don't want to rush through the process of desensitizing him to this new sound, so we're going slow. We focused on two things today. The first part was making sure I was moving further away from the treat and train as we did more reps. The second was hitting the dispense button when Kramer wasn't right next to it. By tossing a treat in the other direction and adding some distance between Kramer and the treat and train, the sound wasn't as jarring. I kept the criteria loose for today so we could focus simply on the sound aspect.

I've been wanting a Treat and Train for some time now and I finally got my hands on one! My intention is to eventually use it in the car during nosework class and trials.
The sound is a bit scary for Kramer, so today's goal was to get him feeling more comfortable with hearing the sound it makes. I don't want him to fixate on the Treat and Train, so I'm rewarding him when he backs away from it, sits, and gives me eye contact. After a few reps, I added the tone into the mix. The tone will take the place of a verbal marker
while we're training, similar to using a clicker. 🐾🐕🦴

Cole was recently adopted from the @niagaracspca and was gifted a training sponsorship to help him settle into his new home. In addition to learning some basic manners, having a solid recall is one of the most important skills for your dog to learn. We're starting out with building a strong foundation to Cole's recall by keeping him on a short leash and making sure he is following through every single time. Once he has mastered that, we will slowly increase the challenge by practicing around more distractions and using a longer leash.

Duffy was recently adopted from The City of Buffalo Animal Shelter. His owner reached out because she needed some help with his manners.
Living in an apartment usually means you have some shared spaces with neighbors, including hallways and entrances. It also means the likelihood of running into said neighbors is higher. Having control in these shared spaces was very important to Duffy's owner.
Here, we're teaching Duffy that he can't just bust through doorways like the kool-aid man. #ohyeah Duffy is learning to wait for his owner to give him the ok before going through thresholds.

Lulu's owner reached out shortly after bringing her home because he wanted to start training with her right away. One of the skills we have been working on is her engagement with him while they're out walking. In the first clip, Lulu is being rewarded often for looking up and engaging with her owner. As time progressed (about 6 weeks between these clips), the rewards have become less frequent, but she is still engaging with him just as much. 🙌

Some food for thought. It's pretty common to want to reward your dog the moment you give them their marker word. But what if you're trying to teach them to hold a position or command? I've found that delaying the delivery of the reward can sometimes be more helpful, especially when trying to build duration of their watch/look.
