📣 Today has been a busy day for Cheatgrass patients, so take the time to look your pet over before it becomes a painful and uncomfortable issue.

Cheatgrass can cause abscesses in dogs in several ways:

Inhaling 🌾

If a dog inhales cheatgrass, it can travel down the trachea and become a foreign object that can move to the lungs, heart, or abdomen and cause an abscess.

Skin embedding 🌾

The barbs of cheatgrass can get stuck in a dog's skin, especially if the dog rolls around in it. If left untreated, the infection can spread and lead to painful abscesses.

Lodging in fur 🌾

Cheatgrass awns can get stuck in a dog's fur or between their toes, and then poke through the skin, causing an abscess.

What is Alpha2EQ?

Our Alpha2EQ kits filter and use the potent biological
anti-inflammatory molecule to address equine lameness, joint inflammation, soft tissue injury and airway inflammation at the source.

🩸 Alpha-2-macroglobulin: A potent anti-inflammatory molecule:

Alpha-2-macroglobulin (α2M) is a naturally occurring protein within the blood. The molecule has the ability to block the destructive effect of these enzymes by capturing them in a “trap” when the enzymes cleave the molecule’s amino acid “bait” region. α2M has a unique multimodal mechanism of action: non-specific protease inhibition, gene regulation, as well as cytokine and growth factor modulation.

Dr. Josie Ackmann is seen here performing a castration with the Henderson tool.

What is a Henderson castration?

Henderson castration is a method used on all mature stallions, donkeys and most colts over 18 months due to larger testicle size. The Henderson castration tool hooks to the cord above the testicle and attaches to a drill. It is then used to slowly spin the testicle off. While this sounds horrifyingly barbaric, studies have actually shown that horses undergoing this type of castration have a tendency to bleed less, swell less, be less painful, and heal faster. It is also a type of closed castration, and tends to be associated with fewer complications. Additionally, this is a superior way to castrate donkeys, as it greatly decreased the risks associated with blood loss.

LIVESTOCK & PET SAFETY IN A HEAT WAVE 🥵☀️☀️

Livestock and pet owners should take appropriate precautions to protect their animals from high temperatures that can cause them to suffer from heat-related stress and illness.
Heavier, fattened livestock, those with dark coats, and chronic health conditions are at the greatest risk for stress from heat.

Signs of stress in livestock:

Animals bunching together

Heavy panting

Slobbering

Lack of coordination

Trembling

If you see any of the following heat exhaustion signs in your pet, seek immediate veterinary care:

Anxiousness

Excessive panting

Restlessness

Excessive drooling

Abnormal tongue color

Collapse

Pet owners should remember to not leave animals in vehicles. A car's interior temperature can rise within minutes, creating suffocating temperatures that lead to animal health problems and often death. When pets are outdoors, it's important to be sure they have access to shade and plenty of fresh, clean, cool water. Animals kept indoors should have proper ventilation.
Additional tips to help pets and livestock deal with the heat:

Provide shade; move them to shaded pens if possible

Provide water--the hotter it is, the more water they should drink (providing a sprinkler can also help them to cool down)

Don't overwork livestock – it's safest to work with livestock in the early morning when body temperatures are low

Postpone routine procedures (such as vaccination, hoof trimming, dehorning) until the weather cools

Avoid unnecessary transportation – if livestock must be moved, do so in the late evening or early morning hours

Take dogs for early morning or late-evening walks

For more information or if you have concerns about the health of your pets or livestock, contact your local veterinarian.

JUST A REMINDER, TO ALL DOG OWNERS.

⚠️🚙⚠️ Despite the warnings, hundreds of dogs in the US die every year after being left in a hot car. Someone you know may need to read this very important message. ⚠️🚙⚠️

SIX MINUTES is all it takes for a dog to overheat in a hot car.

Your dog could suffer serious injury or die in a matter of minutes if left alone in a car.

• The temperature inside a closed vehicle left in the sun can double within 12 minutes.

• At least 75% of the temperature increase in a closed vehicle occurs within 5 minutes of closing the vehicle, and at least 89% of the temperature increase occurs within 15 minutes of closing the vehicle.

• Temperatures exceeding 104˚ F can lead to death or serious injury for the occupants.

• Temperatures in a closed vehicle sitting in the hot sun can reach 160˚F and above. An animal will suffer immeasurably and may die before the temperature reaches 150˚F.

• Even when parked in the shade, the vehicle temperatures can exceed 104˚F.

• Leaving windows down more than 2 inches on an unattended vehicle will not prevent a car from reaching extreme temperatures.

• Even if the animal is revived, they can die due to severe internal organ damage.

Your dog trusts you to have their best interest at heart ALWAYS.
Please don’t risk their safety.

If you are not taking your dog inside your destination with you, PLEASE leave them at home where they are comfortable and safe.

👋 Please welcome Dr. Kelly Liebers to Buffalo Veterinary Clinic!!! We are happy to have her aprt of our TEAM!

👩‍⚕️ Dr. Liebers graduated from Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2024 and joined the BVC team in June of the same year. She grew up in Whitehall, Montana, and Homer, Alaska, and prior to veterinary school, she worked as a veterinary assistant and was on the Montanan State University lambing crew. Her MD father played a role in Dr. Liebers’ interest in medicine, but her lifelong love of animals made the veterinary field a natural choice. She loves the variety involved in mixed animal practice and the opportunities it provides for constant growth and learning. Her fields of interest include small ruminants, ultrasonography, and breeding management of mares/large animal obstetrics. Dr. Liebers is a member of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and the American Association of Equine Practitioners.

When she’s not at work, Dr. Liebers enjoys outdoor activities with her equally outdoors oriented fiancé, Drew, and their son, Lane, born during her final year in veterinary school. The family loves hiking, camping, fly fishing, and skiing. Dr. Liebers also enjoys reading, knitting, and tying flies. Rounding out the household are furry family members Madi, a rescued yellow lab with a penchant for chasing chickens, and Stevie, a young mutt whose breed is anyone’s guess.
