Prepare for Your Puppy – The Stuff by Hannah Pemberton | Apr 29, 2018 http://www.caninecountryacademy.com/2018/04/prepare-for-your-puppy-the-stuff/ "Deciding to bring a puppy into your life is a big decision! Whether you get your puppy from a rescue group or reputable breeder, you want to make sure you’re prepared. We also want to make sure you’re prepared both mentally as well as having appropriate items (without over buying!). Mentally speaking, we find it helpful if you expect a puppy- not an adult dog in a puppy body. "

Causes Your pet’s Cells to Starve, Even When Providing Certain Macronutrients

My boy is sensitive to peas. Peas are used as a source of protein in a lot of pet foods. Took me a while to find one without peas. But he is thriving on it. The pet food industry's goal is to sell their pet food. Sometimes that goal can conflict with keeping healthy pets. Learn to read the labels. Know what you're feeding your babies.

If you listen to the pet food industry, you may be wondering how much is enough protein for your pet and if too much can have negative long-term effects.

Meow or Never

The reason we exist is because no one wants to find homes for 20,000 cats! Trap-neuter-return (TNR) is the humane way to control the stray cat population in our community. Learn more or join us as a volunteer. We need trap, transport and foster volunteers - just let us know if you'd like to help!

I days of yor, I lost a couple of dogs to Heart Worms and fleas n ticks are no fun either. No MORE! Haven's had a flea in 20 years!

Spring is here and Summer-like temperature are upon us. You know what that means?

Adyn wants to remind everyone who decided to take the Winter off from flea and tick control products, now is the time to get back on them. Generally, in this climate, we recommend them year-round as well as heartworm prevention ALWAYS, but some people try to skip the flea and tick protection when the temperatures are milder.

We suspect since we had a mild or non-existent Winter season, the fleas and ticks will return with a vengeance this year. It's always better to stay ahead of them rather than try to control them later on.

Dogs need to learn how to meet on leash. Yes, some dogs cannot handle meeting dogs in this way. But starting young can set them up for on leash greeting success.

First, we work on teaching the steps with people greeting long before dog-dog greeting.

Second, we work with two dogs who are likely to enjoy one another. Then go at the dogs pace to ensure they each have a good first impression.

Next, we practice the steps of each dog seated at their handler's side, offering eye contact, able to think and learn and give explicit permission to greet. During the greeting the handler tries to keep a loose leash so tension does not create conflict between dogs.

Finally, we work on "Let's Go" to disengage from the greeting.

As you can see both dogs REALLY want to say hi. Then they are able to remember their training. It's not easy being an adolescent puppy.

Day Training Update: Our little Corgi friend Jack worked very hard last week on his skills including some fitness and confidence building. You will get a laugh at his use of this surface. Does he rock it out or what?!

We just love this little guy. He's meeting with Hannah twice a week to build a strong foundation in manners, socialization and have fun while doing it.

Hannah's Adolescent Pup Students worked on a very important impulse control skill: "wait" at the door.

Keep your teenage pup from dashing out the door. Thinking when going through doors. Easier to take to new places with door manners.

Good job Monday students!
