🚩🚩🚩THIS IS A LONG READ BUT WELL WORTH IT🚩🚩🚩

I often get asked by my training and even grooming clients if “Doggie Daycares” are a good/beneficial option for their dogs.

My answer is always YES and NO.

WHY? Watch for the RED FLAGS. Ask these questions when considering a Daycare/Day Camp for your dog….

1. Always ask if the dogs are under 24/7 supervision. If they say yes dig a little. Ask them to elaborate….most companies will say “yes, of course!” But they really are not…..have them specify if someone is actually physically in the area with the dogs monitoring their every move. This 9/10 times is not the case…because most business cut corners on hiring and are not staffed adequately to accommodate a day care program unless they are solely a day care business.

2. BIG RED FLAG. They do not have an experienced behavioralist/trainer that performs an in-depth evaluation on your dog and every other dog before they turn them loose into day care. Some dogs just are not suitable for the day care atmosphere and that is ok! However, they should be evaluated first to realize this and not just be “thrown to the wolves”. A good daycare will have a nuetral “demo dog” they use to evaluate a dog before turning them loose into a bigger group of dogs.

3. How many dogs do they allow and are they separated into big/little dog groups. Most day cares that are “in it for the money” just throw them all together in large amounts because they like that pay check with more and more dogs. There should be a policy in effect only so many dogs per daycare attendant and size of the facility.

4. If they don’t ask to see and keep on file all your dogs vaccination records, then they are not checking everyone else. This is how illness can be spread…every dog should under go a health check before being added to a group. Just a general once over to make sure the dog is vaccinated appropriately and appears healthy. If a dog has any questionable physical appearance it should be turned away. This goes for as little as a skin irritation, open wounds, leaky runny eyes and or nose.

5. INTACT ANIMALS SHOULD NOT BE IN A DAYCARE ENVIRONMENT PERIOD AFTER A CERTAIN AGE OR WHEN THEY ARE IN SEASON!! Negligence negligence negligence…..this can throw off a whole groups atmosphere. If a bitch goes into heat while in a group this can be a very dangerous out come. Dogs are instinctive creatures and their instincts are very strong when it comes to mating. This also goes for intact dogs as well. When you throw multiple intact males into a group together there are bound to be fights. It’s inevitable…it’s going to happen. Keep in mind even if altered, dogs are alpha led animals there are still chances of fights breaking out. Ask what their plan of action is if a fight does by chance break out. Do they have safety equipment readily available?

6. Ask to observe the play areas and the facilities. Don’t expect to go in the rooms and play with all the dogs; however, they should be inviting and open to showing you where the dogs will be kept. Closed doors are a BIG RED FLAG at any animal service facility. If you can’t see what’s going on their is usually a reason and they are hiding something. Make sure the facility is clean kept does not reek of p*e and p**p. They should be daily totally disinfected and immediately disinfected if an accident should happen. Hence another reason why they should be under constant hands on observation. One of the most common ways diseases is spread from dog to dog is through contact with animal waste.

7. Ask what training the daycare tenants have underwent, ask if their is a trainer on-site 24/7. Anyone working in the daycare area should undergo basic training of signs to look for to try and prevent fights from breaking out and in case one should break out they should be trained how to properly “break up” an escalated situation. A trainer should be on-site during all business hours that daycare is offered.

8. Ask yourself if daycare really for you and your dog? While yes, it can be a great socialization tool it can also be a huge set back. Dogs can and will learn from eachother. They can pick up bad habits from other dogs they are paired with. If your dog is undergoing a training program I would definitely avoid certain daycares. Especially ones that do not perform an in-depth evaluation on each dog first and also allow a trail period before they accept the dog regularly.

This was a long read but I feel like most people should be educated on the pros and cons of daycare…please please PLEASE make sure the daycare you choose if you do decide to use one at least follows all these protocols. These are very basic and any good business will follow them to insure animals in their care are property cared for.

Todays training topic: The importance of place training.

1. Allows your dog their own space.
2. It gives your dog boundaries.
3. It provides structure.
4. Builds impulse control.
5. Mentally stimulating.

These 5 points are just a few of the place command benefits.

Place training when done appropriately is an excellent tool/command. It opens the door for a happy and confident dog.

Is this something you are interested in with your dog?

Did you know that certain breeds grow hair in the ear canal that is best removed with regular grooming?

Have you checked your doggos ears recently?

Things to look for:
Coffee Ground like substance in the canal.
Unpleasant odor (ye**ty like).
Red/inflamed/scaly cartilage.

If you notice any of the above signs it COULD be indication of an ear infection and you should talk to your veterinarian.

Regular ear care helps prevent infection….I offer a fresh’n up package that includes:
Ear cleaning/Ear hair removal
Teeth Brushing
Clip and file nails
Waterless shampoo and brush out.

Very good points in this read!

10 Reasons Not to Use a Retractable Leash:

1: The length of retractable leashes, some of which can extend up to 26 feet, allows dogs to get far enough away from their humans that a situation can quickly turn dangerous. A dog on a retractable leash is often able to run into the middle of the street, for example, or make uninvited contact with other dogs or people.

2: In the above scenario, or one in which your pet is being approached by an aggressive dog, it is nearly impossible to get control of the situation if the need arises. It's much easier to regain control of – or protect -- a dog at the end of a six-foot standard flat leash than it is if he's 20 or so feet away at the end of what amounts to a thin string.

3: The thin cord of a retractable leash can break – especially when a powerful dog is on the other end of it. If a strong, good-sized dog takes off at full sp*ed, the cord can snap. Not only can that put the dog and whatever he may be chasing in danger, but also the cord can snap back and injure the human at the other end.

4: If a dog walker gets tangled up in the cord of a retractable leash, or grabs it in an attempt to reel in their dog, it can result in burns, cuts, and even amputation. In addition, many people have been pulled right off their feet by a dog that reaches the end of the leash and keeps going. This can result in bruises, "road rash," broken bones, and worse.

5: Dogs have also received terrible injuries as a result of the sudden jerk on their neck that occurs when they run out the leash, including neck wounds, lacerated trachea, and injuries to the spine.

6: Retractable leashes allow dogs more freedom to pull at the end of them, which can look like aggression to another dog who may decide to "fight back."

7: The handles of retractable leashes are bulky and can be easily pulled out of human hands, resulting in a runaway dog.

8: Along those same lines, many dogs – especially fearful ones – are terrorized by the sound of a dropped retractable leash handle and may take off running, which is dangerous enough. To make matters worse, the object of the poor dog's fear is then "chasing" her, and if the leash is retracting as she runs, the handle is gaining ground on her – she can't escape it. Even if this scenario ultimately ends without physical harm to the dog (or anyone else), it can create lingering fear in the dog not only of leashes, but also of being walked.

9: Retractable leashes, like most retractable devices, have a tendency to malfunction over time, either refusing to extend, refusing to retract, or unspooling at will.

10: Retractable leashes are an especially bad idea for dogs that haven't been trained to walk politely on a regular leash. By their very nature, retractable train dogs to pull while on leash, because they learn that pulling extends the lead.

If your dog is well trained, gentle mannered and smart enough to master a regular leash and a retractable leash without being confused, you could be one of the rare guardians that can walk your pooch on any kind of leash without increasing risks to either one of you.

Just some kennel exercise with Brahman.

Did you know:
When I teach my dogs kennel I use the term ”get in”
Why?
Because I’ve found that this is teaching the dog that you want them to enter a space. By teaching this command I am able to use it in many different situations. When I want my dog to ”get in” a vehicle, when I need my dog to go into an unknown kennel to them, when I want my dog to ”get in” the boat.
This is just a more versatile command instead of just saying kennel.

It’s more a preference ☺️ Whatever command works best for you and your dog is just as acceptable.
