🚫🌿 March 17-23 is Animal Poison Prevention Week! Prevention starts with knowledge!

10 steps to take to help keep our homes toxin-free!
1. **Store Chemicals Safely**: Ensure household cleaners, pesticides, and other chemicals are stored securely out of reach of children and pets, preferably in locked cabinets.
2. **Proper Disposal**: Dispose of expired or unused medications, household cleaners, and other chemicals safely according to local regulations. Many communities offer hazardous waste disposal days or drop-off locations.
3. **Educate Family Members**: Teach children about household hazards and the importance of not ingesting or touching potentially harmful substances.
4. **Check Labels**: Always read labels on household products and follow usage instructions carefully. Look for non-toxic, eco-friendly options.
5. **Keep Plants Safe**: Be mindful of toxic plants that may harm pets and children. Research and remove toxic plants from your home or place them out of reach.
6. **Secure Trash Bins**: Ensure trash bins are securely closed to prevent pets and wildlife from accessing potentially harmful substances.
7. **Be Cautious with Food**: Keep human and pet food securely stored to prevent accidental pet ingestion. Be aware of foods that are toxic to animals.
8. **Install Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors**: Regularly test and maintain detectors to safeguard against carbon monoxide and smoke poisoning.
9. **Childproofing**: Install childproof locks on cabinets containing hazardous materials and cover electrical outlets to prevent accidental contact.
10. **Choose Natural Alternatives**: Opt for natural cleaning products and pest control methods whenever possible to reduce exposure to harsh chemicals.
These steps can help create a safer and healthier environment for our family and pets.
Do you have a safety tip you would like to share? If so, we'd love to hear about it!

Let's talk a bit more about your pet's oral hygiene. 🦷✨
When Mitch was under anesthesia for his neutering, the vet removed some retained baby teeth.
She said his teeth were overcrowded due to his tiny mouth, so brushing his teeth was imperative.
We really hadn't started a routine yet, but we took the advice to heart and started the following week. 🦷✨🐾

Throwback to my college days when I received a panic call from Dad 📞😱 Lulu, our beloved Siamese cat, had suddenly stopped eating her Purina Cat Chow and Dad was beside himself with worry. So, I made the trip home that weekend to play pet detective 🕵️‍♂️🐾. What did we discover? Our senior kitty, Lulu, had LOST ALL HER TEETH! 😲 Poor thing couldn't enjoy her favorite kibble anymore. Solution? A switch to wet food in a can was proposed and voila! 🥫🍽️ Lulu was back to her happy, purring self and blessed us with her presence for many more years. 🎉💕 Moral of the story? Always check those kitty teeth and adapt to their changing needs.

LOOKING FOR A FOREVER HOME FOR THIS KITTY!

Hey everyone!

About 2 months ago a couple I know found a cat staying under their shed. They decided to rescue it, and took him to their vet to be checked out, neutered, vaccinated, etc. He's fully litter trained and the vet think he's around 8 months old. They posted on their local community FB page and lost and found pets page...no luck. They also have contacted a number of animal rescue organizations and no one claimed him

They named him Leo, and decided to keep him. He has been doing very well. He's adapting to indoor domestic life and the playful "kitten" has really come out.

They are an older couple and he a bit too rambunctious for them. They have decided to place him out for adoption, possibly with a family that can appreciate his moments of "teenage" energy. He's a beautiful cat...very friendly...loves to nap on the sofa and beds. If anyone is interested in adopting Leo, or if you know of anyone who might, please let me know.

It's about an important meeting tomorrow morning on animal welfare in Harnet county

Urgent Announcement – Important Meeting Notice

Harnett County is well-into the process of revising the Animal Services Ordinance and there is a VERY important meeting scheduled for Tuesday, August 9th at 9:00am.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐧𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.

Meeting details:
When: During Harnett County Board of Commissioners Work Session; Begins at 9am but may last a couple of hours, the public input session is located much later the agenda

Where: Harnett County Resource Center and Library Building – 455 McKinney Parkway, Lillington

Topics to be Discussed:
• Results and feedback of the feasibility study looking at a new animal shelter building by Shelter Planners of America
• Public Input Session on recent revisions to the Harnett County Animal Services Ordinance (redline copy available via the agenda package link below)

https://treefree.harnett.org/WebLink/DocView.aspx?id=6006260&dbid=0&repo=HarnettCounty

After reviewing the changes being made, it’s sadly clear to us, that the HCAS Ordinance continues to lack any significant protections for the animals in our community. We will continue to be a voice for the animals and intend to speak out again, requesting stronger local laws such as:

• The ability for Animal Services to immediately impound animals that are at risk or in danger due to inhumane living conditions, heat/cold or violations of the ordinance.
• Laws prohibiting animal fighting
• Stronger more enforceable requirements for adequate shelter and humanely clean conditions
• Anti-tethering restrictions (no chains, no padlocks, no dogs tethered outside during extreme weather)
• Stronger language defining Abuse and Mistreatment
• Spay & Neuter requirements for animals running at large, tethered, or deemed dangerous.
• The creation of an Animal Services Advisory Board

We know so many of you care as deeply about these issues as we do. NOW is the time to make it clear to our local leaders, we expect change – because our animals deserve better. Other counties in NC are doing the important work of making animal welfare a core issue and it’s time for that kind of change in Harnett County.

Yes, we know it’s short notice.
Yes, there has been little public information presented.
Yes, it’s during the workday and difficult to attend.
Yes, this may be our only chance to make any REAL change.

Join us. You will need to register at the door to speak. Speakers will be limited to 3 mins or 30 minutes total (for a total of 10 speakers).

If you aren't able to attend in-person, you can email a statement to be read aloud directly to Melissa Capps at [email protected]

FOUND **** Do you know this dog?. She appears to be a senior. She has a loose choke collar, no tags. She was wandering up Lemeul Black Rd near Forest Oaks. My friends helped me rescue her and are her keeping overnight. Like me they are a multiple dog household and just can't accommodate her. Please contact .me if you know her or her owners.

Happy Valentines Day! This is my home sending your home oodles of love!

Today is also Pet Theft Awareness Day.

Pet Theft Awareness Day brings attention to the importance of pet identification methods. It is a day that encourages those with pets to take steps to ensure the animal’s security and their own peace of mind.

Pet Theft Awareness Day was Launched in 1988 by the Last Chance for Animals organization. Pet Theft Awareness Day is aimed at educating animal owners in keeping their pets safe from thieves. With almost 2 million pets being stolen annually in American alone, the threat is real.

Microchipping is a blessing when a pet is lost, but it does not solve the problem of theft.

There are numerous reasons why people steal pets. Here are just a few reasons:
1. They want a pet and chose yours as the opportunity presented itself to take the pet.
2. Your pet is a pedigree, and they sell the pet to someone else.
3. More sinister reasons are:
a. Selling your pet to be used for research.
b. Selling your dog to a dog fighting ring and your dog is used as bait to train their dogs to fight.

They all lead to one conclusion! KEEP YOUR PET SAFE!

I have mixed emotions as to why Valentine’s Day was chosen to observe this very sad and horrid practice!

There is SO MUCH I could post on how to protect your pets, but I won’t. Here is a direct link to Last Chance for Animals with many articles the subject.
