🎀 Happening here at Fetch the Leash on Sunday 12/15! 🎀

We're very excited to be teaming up with the Mobile pet food shelf this Sunday, December 15th in Burlington, VT to provide information to local pets and their people on dogs' basic needs (based on scientific research), including how to accurately recognize and meet those needs. We will also be distributing pet food and supplies, and providing resources on low-cost vet care, grooming, etc. to those who need them.

The Mobile Pet Food Shelf is a progressive hyperlocal initiative that supports pets by meeting them and their people where they are - literally and figuratively. Aside from helping to meet pets' needs, they are focused on accessibility of resources. Research has found that animals who can remain in their homes will generally have much better welfare than they would in a shelter, so providing resources to owners to allow them to keep their pets greatly improves pets' quality of life!

This event is open to all, so please share widely, and particularly with those who may need extra support and resources for their furry (or feathery or scaley) family members!

And massive thank you to Fetch The Leash Dog Behavior & Training for allowing us to borrow their space!

This! ❤️

PSA: Your puppy is not an ADULT DOG until they are 2 or 3 years old! Some breeds mature slower, some faster, but your dog still has a LOT of maturing to do after puppyhood has past.

I often meet people who expect A LOT of their young dog as soon as they're done teething, or they're fully potty trained, or they reach 6, 9, or 12 months. They think "Okay, puppyhood is past. My dog is now an adult" and start to ask the dog for a TON of obedience, or they expect their young dog to be less playful or to rest more quickly.

And while I understand where this is coming from, I urge you to think twice and give your dog some grace!

After puppyhood comes ADOLESCENCE. Adolescence in dogs, just like in human kids, is a tumultuous time where the brain lends itself more towards impulsivity and "act first, think later" behavior. This stage may last up to 2 or 3 years for some dogs, and when they are in the thick of it during adolescence they literally DON'T have the emotional regulation in place to make good choices as much as we'd like them to.

Dogs at this age benefit greatly from even MORE patience, and the opportunity to continue regular socialization time with their peers (just like it's NORMAL for human teens to be around their friends a lot!). Dogs this age need to be set up for success just as much as young puppies, even though they may start to LOOK like adults.

Please, your dogs are only young once. One day you're going to be looking into the soulful eyes of your 13 year old senior dog and wishing you could have their puppyhood and adolescence back. Don't rush your dog's growing up.

🧸 Their advice: keep your loved ones close, shred your teddies, medicate if needed, and stay safe!

We have big news to share! Our beloved team member has completed the arduous requirements to be certified as a graduate of The Academy for Dog Trainers and has officially earned her CTC!!

This is a multi-year process involving many hours of study and practice. Congratulations, Anna!!!! 🍁 🐶 🏆

Hear ye! We have a newly-minted Academy Graduate to celebrate!

Anna Griffin is an environmental science graduate with a strong animal welfare orientation as well as enormous talent and brains. She works in Burlington VT at Fetch the Leash and is now officially a CTC!

Please help us wish her congratulations!
