Great news for Yancey County! Pitch in if you can 😁

And now the news we have been waiting to announce!

A few years ago we had a dream. A dream that we could build our own spay/neuter clinic on our grounds and offer low cost surgery options to our community members, our peers at other shelters, and for our own shelter animals. We have been able to achieve a part of that dream by remodeling our existing in-house clinic to accommodate equipment for surgery and being licensed by the Depatment of Agriculture to perform surgeries. Dr. Rachel Getgen and Dr. Erin Purvis have been performing spay/neuter here for shelter owned animals over the past year. They have successfully altered over 400 animals in our care! This one simple thing has done so much to help with finalizing adoptions sooner and moving animals out of the shelter and into homes so much more quickly. But there is much more to do!

We are now beginning the process of fund raising in earnest to build the new stand alone clinic. When this clinic is complete we will be able to offer those services to others, not just our shelter animals. It will be the single most impactful accomplishment for the overall welfare of animals in Yancey County to date!

Due to the generosity of the ASPCA, the National Veterinary Association and Petco Love, along with an amazing amount of money donated in memory of Janicke Glynn, we are thrilled to report that we are already almost halfway to our goal of $250K. Over the next few months we will be announcing fundraising events, sending out mailers, and accepting any and all donations for this campaign. If you would love to get us started toward that second half, hit that donate button below! Of course we also accept donations in the form of checks made out to YCHS (please note that it is for the clinic) and you are welcome to drop by anytime to make a donation in person.

Everything we do is made possible by the generosity of people and organizations and together we can change the future of domestic dogs and cats in Yancey County!

How is everyone handling this cold weather?? Minnow has apparently had enough and is refusing to go outside except to use the bathroom. Wilson is happy to go out in the cold, but his feet get sore after a while in the snow.

Now is the time to be creative inside to keep your dogs' minds active and keep them from getting bored. Indoor training sessions and enrichment like Kongs and Pupsicles can go a long way.

If your dog loves the cold, then have fun- You will have the trails and parks all to yourselves! Otherwise, stay cozy!

With highs in the 20s this week, training inside is sometimes a relief. Today, Ivy practiced staying in her bed with distractions around her. The most tempting distraction? Me kneeling in front of her to snap a pic! πŸ˜†

These girls have been training on leash together for quite some time. Scout started with me because she was not fond of other dogs, but I'm very proud of her for accepting Minnow into her life.
Yesterday, we took the leashes off. I was confident it would go well, but of course I prepared for conflict as I always do when I introduce dogs.
Honestly, they mostly ignored each other, which I was very pleased with. They trotted around together a bit doing some mutual sniffing, but I think Minnow could sense that Scout was a little uncomfortable and gave her lots of space. Maybe I was hoping for a little play, but that should not be our goal! Coexisting calmly together is a feat of its own and sometimes keeping arousal lower can set them up for success.
Relaxed dogs, relaxed humans sharing space together. So proud of Scout and Minnow 🧑

There is still so much beauty here.

It was cold yesterday when I met with Scout, and the park is still trashed from the storm. Trashed is better than destroyed though, like the other parks. It's still hard to "proceed as normal" when you can't escape the constant reminders of how all of our lives changed three months ago. Every day, I get a gut punch when I think of all the people still suffering, and how things will never be the same. But if I look above the downed trees, mud, and debris, I see these beautiful mountains... which will always be here no matter how much damage nature and humanity throws at them. And I see this beautiful dog, asking to be trained on a freezing cold day, amid the chaos.

Made a new friend yesterday! This is girl is going to be a blast to work with.

If you are anywhere remotely near Fork Mountain Rd, PLEASE keep an eye and ear out for Finn. He could have covered a lot of ground chasing a deer. He is dragging a long leash and could be wrapped up somewhere. We are all very worried about Finn. If you see a goldendoodle in the area, please stop and see if it is Finn. He is very friendly and wearing an ID tag with owner info.

Happy 7th birthday to Wilson, who is the best and most handsome farm dog, cuddle buddy, and big brother we could ask for. Wilson has taught me so much about dogs and how to work through challenges and accept a dog for who they truly are. Wilson is unique and funny and wonderful, and I wouldn't change anything about him. 🧑

Two dogs is the perfect number or dogs for our family! Layla is here with us this week reminding us all why this is the case πŸ˜†

Dogs are complex, complicated creatures. Often times people think that if dogs are "friendly," they can all be thrown in together without a second thought. But what does it mean for a dog to be friendly? In what scenario? With whom? And where?
These dogs are all wonderful dogs, but they have varying levels of resource guarding, social anxiety, and arousal control issues. These are variations of normal! With good management and supervision, these dogs can get along great and have a positive and peaceful week living together. 🧑
