The biggest motivation I have for training dogs is to give them more freedom. Dogs have become incredibly restricted in the last couple of generations. The last thing I want to do is use my training to restrict them even further. Let them move their bodies, let them sniff, let them BE DOGS.
Yes, this takes time and training to get them to be reliable off leash, but if your goal in training is not to improve your DOG'S life... you're doing it wrong...

This one's pulling on my heart strings, y'all. Ginger is a *special* dog. If you are looking for a low-maintenance companion with a big head and a big heart, don't pass this one up.

She is house trained, crate trained, spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and preventatives, does great at the groomer, and is an overall gentle and loving dog. Someone, please take this girl home and give her a chance. You won't regret it!

Get out there! Your dog still needs exercise and enrichment on rainy days. My dogs hesitate at the door in the rain too, but once we're out there, we're all glad we went. I promise you (and your dog) won't melt!

Scout's breed was meant to be herding cows and sheep all day! Since she doesn't have that opportunity, we need to be creative about how to engage her and challenge her mentally. Luckily, like most dogs, she loves learning tricks.

Notice how engaged she is and how many tail wags you see. This is how dogs should look no matter what you are training them to do!

If you want to get good at the mechanics and nuance of training, start with tricks! Just like your dog, you will get better and better at it each session.

I had an hour with Scout, and we did three sessions of "roll over" practice, which is a brand new skill. This video is just one of those sessions. The rest of the hour, we walked and sniffed and worked on other skills. Keep your sessions short to keep engagement high!

Happy 2nd "Gotcha Day" and estimated 4th Birthday to my soul sistah. This dog saved me when I needed it most. I can't put into words what she means to me, so I won't try.
